Is there a way to place variable content into a text box without using "%%"?

Hi Allen,

It's a bit more complicated of a set up - but if you used a second variable to reference the first? So the trigger would read something like "Adjust value of Variable B to the value of Variable A when X happens (and/or include a condition such as and the Value of A is equal to Z)".

Maybe you could share an example of what you're looking to set up so that folks could play around with your example?

What I am trying to accomplish:

Have a routine that I start by selecting a button.  On each slide is a text box for a page number.

The routine would step through the slides sequentially from beginning to end.  As it enters a slide it would place a sequential number into the text box.  The number in the text box would not change until the routine is run again.  This would alleviate having to hand number slides each time a slide is added or deleted.

I've used several authoring programs.  This is the only one that doesn't provide a way to have the slides/pages numbered by the program itself.  Having that function is very basic.

Hi Allen,

Page numbering in Storyline is a hot topic in the forums - so as such there are a few different ways to accomplish it. So you're on the right track using the variable set up, and then adjusting it with a trigger on each slide such as when the timeline starts or when the user clicks the next button (just make sure you've set up a subtraction if they click previous).

Here is a thread with a variable/javascript set up.  This thread includes a few different options such as the variable within Storyline.  In addition to the workarounds mentioned here you may want to submit a feature request regarding the ability to add page/slide numbers.

I don't know of a way to include this prior to publishing. Since Storyline doesn't rely on linear navigation and the user could be jumping between multiple slides based on navigation methods, this is why page numbering is not built in - and something you may want to consider if you're not forcing users to follow from page 1, to page 2, and so on. I would imagine getting to a slide number 7 after you saw 3, could be confusing to some users.
