Jump-to-trigger video control dilemma

Apr 07, 2021

Hi everyone,

I would really appreciate any help with the following problem.

I want to create a sequence using the jump-to-time trigger function so that a learner can click on a button and a video will begin and end at specific points. E.g. button 1 plays from 0.00 to 00.05, button 2 from 00.05 to 00.10 seconds etc.

  • Firstly, I need the video to be triggered only when a button is hovered over, not automatically.
  • Secondly, I only need a specific portion of the video to play for each of the buttons.

The problem I’ve found is that the jump-to-trigger function appears to be overridden if I also set up a trigger for the video to play ‘when triggered’ as opposed to ‘automatically’. Ideally, I would look for a variable that allows jump-to-trigger functionality to occur once the video has also been triggered. The sequence would be something like this:

Hover over button  >  Trigger video + Jump to trigger  > Play specific portion of video  >  Pause

The only other option I can think of right now is to divide up the video into clips and have them triggered by their associated buttons.

Any help would be much appreciated, thanks!

Hi, Stephen, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes! ✨

There are many ways of working with videos and the jump-to-time triggers in Storyline, so I'm looking forward to the suggestions the community members will have for you.

It's important to keep in mind that the order of triggers is essential when working with buttons.

Personally, I would split the video into different sections, which will give you better control of timing and restrict the user from automatically watching a different section without a trigger/action.
