Lagging after video completes
Aug 17, 2015
Hi everyone,
I have tried everything I can think of but can't seem to fix this. In Storyline 2 I have a project with several video files that play automatically when the slide appears. After the video completes I have triggers to either show another slide layer or to skip to another slide. The problem is, there is a large lag after the video completes before it will show the layer or skip to the appropriate slide (by large I mean up to 30 seconds), but the triggers are working correctly. It isn't lagging to load the video when the slide begins, only after the video completes. Has anyone had this problem? I have tried changing the triggers to show the layer "after the media completes" , then to "at the end of the timeline", to at a specific "cue point". It doesn't seem to make a difference. Some of the video files are larger files that have been trimmed in Storyline... but I also edited the files outside of Storyline and inputted the trimmed files and the lag remained regardless. I'm stuck!
Any help would be great. Thanks!

Hi Amanda
does the timeline of the slide finish at the same time as the timeline of the video? Is this only happening when you preview the story file or it happens when you publish as well?
Hi Wendy,
The timeline of the slide does finish at the same time as the video file. It happens in the preview and after publishing the file.
Hi Matthew,
I just tried your suggestion and the media completes and shows the layer instantly as it should in the basic file. I'm not sure what is causing the lag in the original project.
Hi Amanda,
Can you share your project file that's causing the lag? I just did a quick test over here with sample video and works as you intended. There may be something else causing the issue in your file.
I would try creating a new story file and importing the video in and using the
when media completes trigger - that has always worked for me.
Unfortunately I'm not able to share the file publicly because it is created using a patient's information and image and there is confidentiality concerns. Is there anything else that could be causing this? There are multiple videos throughout the project - all have a lag, some are longer than others. Is it possible that is it because the file is too large? This project goes to students at the end of this week and I won't be able to recreate a new story file by then.
I deleted all of the other videos in the project, saved it, and previewed it and the 26 second lag remained. So it doesn't seem to be the videos causing the issue.
Hi Amanda,
Without seeing the file, it's hard to say. If you can share privately you can upload to us here. Our team can sign an NDA if needed as well.
You mentioned deleting all the other videos, so it's just that one video? I'd look to confirm that there isn't any extra time at the end of that video - as if you're seeing it in preview as well, it's likely not an issue with loading as all the elements would likely be loaded when the preview started. Can you try opening the video in another software tool and timing that compared to the slide's timeline? What happens if you adjust the slide timeline to be minus those 26 seconds - does that allow the video/slide to advance normally or is it cutting off the end of the video?
Just an update - Amanda shared her file privately and it seemed that the extra 26 seconds was happening on the subsequent slide, as nothing was set to appear until 26 seconds in.
Mystery solved - wow thanks Ashley that one was tricky without seeing the file.
It had me stumped too for a bit Wendy - that's why seeing the file sometimes makes all the difference!
Thanks Ashley!
I have no idea how the timeline parameters on the subsequent slide were changed. Such an easy fix. Thank-you!
No worries Amanda - I'm just glad it was such an easy one for me to fix for you!
Yes...I think we were all concentrating on the current slide and trying to think what's happening with the timeline on that one...glad you got it sorted for Amanda - well done!
