Launching External Storyline file

Apr 04, 2014

Does anyone know if it possible to launch a Storyline file from within a Storyline file.

I would like to create a menu structure that starts other Storyline files. I have tried using the URL/File trigger but they but it will not launch the second file. I have tried adding the file as a resource and can't get that to work either.

I am building multiple simulations and the size of the structure makes it difficult to do in one file.

Anny help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Ron,

I was able to do it in one of my courses by following those steps:

1- Publish the other storyline files. Make sure an HTML page is generated (usually story.html)

2- You can create a new slide in the main storyline file and insert the HTML as a web object.

3- If you don't want to go with web objects, you may just link to the other story.html via URL. Since you will be having multiple menus I suggest you have the link as an example "Module1/story.html" for the first menu and "Module2/story.html" for the second menu etc

Once you publish the menu storyline file, go to its folder and simply create new folders as follows:

Module1 --> Place the published files from menu 1 storyline

Module2 --> Place the published files from menu 2 storyline

Note that those files needs to be created in the root directory as per the attached image

Also note that storyline will overwrite the content of the folder whenever you publish the main storyline file. So make sure you make a backup and then just place the files again.

Also this will not work when previewing or launching it locally (it didn't with me at least), so either place the files on a server (or an LMS) or publish as .EXE to test that its working.

Hope this helps

Mohd

Hi!

Have you perhaps found a solution to the above scenario, but one that enables it to work locally? Our clients have great difficulty viewing the presentations on-line due to bandwidth constraints. Since we want the training to be used with as little expert intervention as possible, I need it to be workable locally after being copied from a CD by the client.

I therefore have no control over the actual destination, only my Master folder, with the different published chapters inside this folder. I've found a few posts, where in one in particular, Rebecca posted an example of a relative link:

"Within the My Menu story, I have buttons for each tutorial that use Jump to URL/File triggers.  They use links like this:  ..//Tutorial%20A%20output/story.html

The two periods and backslashes are the relative part.  If you know where your files will always be hosted, you can go ahead and put the full URLs."

I wanted to add that there may have been an issue with your test files being local (on your desktop).  I've had a lot of errors when testing links to files on my hard drive.  I had to upload them to a server to get them to work.  Just a thought for anyone who visits this thread later!"

My question is thus: I need a solution for relative links that work locally and not from the Web or a CD.

I hope someone can help, I have been troubleshooting for what feels like years, OK maybe 3-4 days, but I've run out of play-time and have to start a new project.

Hi Celeste and welcome to Heroes!

Are you referring to the issue initially mentioned where he wanted to link multiple Storyline files? Mohd's solution is a good way to set it up, as there isn't a built in way within Storyline to link a few different courses/files.

If you need the course to work locally, you'll still want to publish for CD, and then the end user will need access to all the files and folder structure that is created during publish. But it's still worth noting that relative URLs aren't supported for web objects. Be sure to use full (absolute) URLs when adding web objects to your content.

A possible workaround for using relative URLs can be found in the forums. This method may work for your scenario, but please note that we don't officially support it.

This is the answer I'd been looking for, for months now!

Thanks so much!

Just a note - if tracking on an LMS is a requirement then this structure won't work - but you could always add a survey slide to the last part of your course and allocate points to the answer (e.g. have you completed all modules? Yes/No) and force learners through the path so that they have to answer the survey question last, it will assign the points and mark them as complete.

Alternatively Simple Scorm Packager: http://jcasolutions.com/ssp is the way to go.
