Link to other applications

Nov 12, 2018

Hi,

I am really sorry if this is an amateurish question (I am relatively new to Storyline) but can you insert a link to another application, e.g. Click here and then the user is taken to Outlook or Word?

Many thanks

Hi, Lesley.

I believe this is within the Hyperlink function. You can use this to link resources such as another website, a file, or maybe send an email to someone, although I'm not sure if there's an option to open an application. If the hyperlink created links to another website, then it will open up a browser to load the website. Same thing goes with an email, if a hyperlink leads to an email address, the device will open up the default email application (if the default is Outlook, then it will open up Outlook ready to compose a message on the email address on the hyperlink), and if it is a file available on the user, then it opens up the file (like a ".docx" file will open up Word, an ".xlsx" file will open up Excel, and so on).

But a link to open up applications/programs(not files), that I'm not sure if it's possible.

I also saw this article, thought it might help you as well:

Hey Lesley.  Pete is going in the right direction, here.  The Resources tab allows you to attach Word and other documents, but it won't cause Word to open.  Anything that Storyline opens will generally be in the context of the internet browser being used to view the course.

Do you need to do a simulation where the learner performs an activity in Word or Outlook?  Try out our step-by-step screen recording modes!  They're perfect for walking through an activity in another program.
