Lost .story file

Nov 27, 2012

Hello Heroes,

After putting hours into my Storyline file, saving every half hour and after every major addition, I suddenly am prompted to save "Untitled.story"!

When did my filename change to Untitled.story? Untitled.story seems to have everything I've been doing, but I can't save the file.

Here's what I tried:

  • I clicked Save and got the message "Somthing went wrong with Storyline, please tell us what happened." And the file did not save or close.
  • I entered all the information about what I had been trying to do when the Save prompt came up and sent it.
  • I tried to Save As, but kept getting the message listed above.
  • I tried to select the scene I was working on and paste it into a new blank Storyline file, but it only copied the first slide.

Does anyone have ideas about why this happened or (please) how I can retrieve my lost work! This is the 3rd time this happened to me and I sent the response each time. Have not heard anything back yet from Articulate support.

Hi Judith,

Sorry to hear that you're having trouble with this course. I looked to see if you had any open cases for this issue, but I don't see anything. Were you expecting a case from the pop-up message you received, or did you open a case through the website? If you opened a case through the site, please share the case number with me and I'll check on the status. If you didn't open one through the site, the "report" that pops up doesn't create one for you. This feature sends in a report, but doesn't issue a case with our support team.

You mentioned that you were saving every half hour while working on this course before it started prompting for the "Untitled" file. Do you remember what you named the file, originally? You might want to check in the output folder for the original saved file.

Also, make sure that you're not working with a file on a network drive or external source (USB drive, etc.). This can cause quite a few issues, including issues with saving the file.

I'd recommend going ahead and contacting our support team right away, if you haven't already, and someone will work with you to figure out what's going on.

Thanks, Christine. You're right -- I didn't atually open a case, I thought the popup report would identify me for the support team.

I didn't even think about whether I was using the network or the PC. This was on a network, so I understand now why it can cause problems.

Where is the "output folder"? I had started with that drag-video.story that someone posted recently, so it probably still had that name.

I found my backup version (before I made some changes), so I'll copy that onto the hard drive and see what happens before I open a case.

Thanks so much!

Hi Judith,

Thanks for getting back to me! That's great, let me know if moving the backup version to your hard drive works out

By output folder, I mean the "default file path" for your saved files. However, if you were trying to save to a network drive, that may be the cause of all the trouble.

Here's an example:

Normally, if you go to save the file for the first time, you'll be able to choose the folder you'd like to save it to. If you're not sure where it's going, you can go to the Articulate menu and click on "Save As". This will open the save window and show you where the files have been saved in the past. You might be able to use this to figure out where the original file was saved. Keep in mind though, if you've changed directories or folders after saving that file, or it's on a network, it may not function the same way.

Let me know how it turns out!
