Making a "transcript"?

May 25, 2012

Hi everyone,

I assume I'm not the first person that's had this issue.  I'm writing a scenario where the learner asks a number of questions in a number of different screens.  The user must ask some of the questions to continue (for example: "What can I do for you today?"), but might or might not click on some of the other options ("How's the weather where you are?").

I'm trying to create a "transcript" that has all of the questions and responses that a learner asks (in the order the learner asks them) as they go through the scenario, and this is proving hard, since just being at a given point in the scenario doesn't guarantee what the user has or hasn't asked.

My first thought was to make a text variable, %transcript%, and add to it every interaction, but as far as I can tell, you can't append to text variables, just make assignments (which would overwrite anything already there).

The other option is to have a layer for the transcript with all the text there but set to 'hidden' until the user clicks, but that would create odd 'gaps' where there were text options that the user didn't click, so it's really far from ideal.

Has anyone tried to do this? Any solutions or tips?

Thanks!

Tim
