Markers on text

Jul 18, 2023

Hi, I would like to know if it's possible to add markers to text in Articulate storyline. I don't mean image of text, but real text that can be read by screen readers. Is that possible, and will the markers also be accessible? Would it be possible for a screen reader user to know which markers are associated with which part of the text? This purpose is to present students with a sample text (e.g. a sample essay) and annotate parts of the essay with tips/advice etc. Thank you, Maria

Hi Maria,

Welcome to the E-Learning Heroes community! ✨

I'm happy to provide some insight and help point you in the right direction! Markers are a great way to reveal content only when learners need it. Learners can hover over markers or click on them to see additional text and media. You can add a marker to the text, but you'll want to make sure the marker isn't covering up important words or sentences.

For instance, you may want to place a marker next to a line of text. I recorded a quick demo where I added a marker and used a screen reader (NVDA) to move through the slide.

  • I used the Tab key on my keyboard to select different objects on the slide. When the marker was highlighted, I selected the Enter key to open the marker, and then the Enter key again to close the marker. Here's a resource on keyboard-accessible markers that you may find useful!

Please let me know if you have any questions and I'll be happy to help! You can also share your file here with the community or privately in a support case for additional assistance. We'll delete it from our systems once troubleshooting is complete.

Hi Kelly - that is so helpful. Thank you!!! Just to double check, so the text doesn't have to be image of text - it can be real text that will be read by a screen reader. I mean the text on the slide that the marker is placed on/near, but also hopefully the text in the marker will be accessible too?

e.g. is that sunset definition in your video, real text or image of text?

Sorry to be harping on about this! It's just that all the examples I can find are of markers being used over images. So it's not clear whether they can be used over/near real text.

Thanks again :)
