Masking objects - Windows 8.1 effect

Hi everyone,
I hope you're having a good week?
I'm trying to create a dashboard which acts like the Windows 8 tile interface however I can't seem to come up with a quick way of creating the desired effect?
The only I can think of is using various layers to do it. So I'm just wondering if there IS an easier way?

It's this affect I'm looking to do!
Any help would be fantastic.

Hope you're having a good week as well - I've seen at least one other example of the "live tile" interface of Windows 8 and you can check out how that was built with these videos:
