Are any other buttons also grayed out (disabled)? What view are you in (Story View, Slide View, etc)? I believe you need to be in Slide View to insert characters (or anything else). Maybe a quick screen print would help?
Thanks for the quick reply, Brenda! Not sure what happened - I closed the file - the practice files I had downloaded - opened a new file and was able to insert characters. put it down to user error, I guess
