It sounds like you have a problem and think knowing the coordinates is the solution. My experience tells me that if you attach your .story file here with a good description of what you want, someone may find another, easier solution.
This was easily accomplished using Assymetric's Toolbook. I created a lesson on how to frisk for radioactive contamination. As the mouse pointer approached a "Hot" spot, the simulated radiation level increased and decreased as the mouse pointer moved away. This requires that the mouse position is always known in real time.

By position, do you mean the window coordinates, or the object it is over?
