I don't have an alternative currently but I notice there's something else going on with whole zoom feature.
When I try to use Cntl-mouse wheel to zoom out, it gets to 66% and then stops and simply scrolls the window, but, also the zoom slider in the bottom right corner becomes disabled too.
The only way I can magnify then is to use the Zoom toolbar option so my guess would be that in my case it's not a mouse issue.
It appears to be a little utility called Katmouse which I use to overcome window's inability to scroll multiple panes within an app unless directly clicked upon.
Once I disable this, the cntrl-zoom now appears to work.

Yan,
I've recently experienced that. Bought a new mouse for $10 and problem solved.

I think Paul may be on to something there, Yan.
Mine has been ridiculously bad for the last couple of weeks. Time for a new mouse.
Perhaps, although it works perfectly well with all my other software.
I wonder if it's because it's a Wacom mouse that came with my Intuos 3 tablet.
Could be, I suppose. If you could test it versus a non-Wacom-issued mouse, that might help narrow down the possibilities.

Ah, mystery solved I think.

Further update, installed WizMouse which seems to work really well.
I can now cntrl-zoom and also scroll any pane that the mouse is hovered over rather than having to click-focus first.
We'll see if it keeps working happily...
