Multiple languages, different quizzes, one course

Aug 12, 2013

Owen Holt has developed a screener showing how to develop a course in multiple languages and use one quiz, through the use of variables, to test lerners in their preferred language (https://player.vimeo.com/video/149073180).

I often develop courses in multiple languages for multiple countries (a different course for each country).  As the requirements in my training vary based on the country, I sometimes have to use different questions in the final quiz.

Is there a way in Storyline to have one course, with multiple quizzes, and have it still pass completion on to the LMS as long as the student passes one of three possible quizzes?  Or using variables of some sort, have the questions in a quiz change based on a choice made somewhere in a course (sometimes showing 18 questions while at other times only showing 16)?

I am sure that there is someone in this forum, whose mind is vastly more talented with Storyline than mine, who will have a unique solution to a conceptual problem that I am unable to I am solve.

Thank you for any and all time and help.

Hi Philip,

This thread may help guide you in developing this quiz, specifically how Chip suggests tracking multiple quizzes.

This one with a reply from Josh, offers suggestions on how to ensure the tracking of results is reporting correctly if a student has passed or not to your LMS.

As you mentioned, there are a lot of talented people in the community who may be able to help you out with some more specifics, but I wanted to ensure you saw those two threads to get you going.

Hey guys!

So a small variation to this is that every year I make several compliance e-learnings where in one  course, a user can choose between 11 languages. So I create one slide where user can choose language, and then 11 scenes with the content in various languages. This e-learning has quiz question slides, the answers to which need to be reportable, irrespective of what language the user chooses.

Currently what I do is:

1) Make an English version of the whole e-learning (normal slides + question slides)

2) Make text export of that, get it translated into the requisite languages.

3) Make copies of the english version, insert translated text. Then make ONE course with one select-your-language slide and the requisite amount of scenes, one for each language.

4) Then I create yet another scene, and populate this with all the question slides in English. Then I copy-paste question content from all languages on to this slide. I turn everything into a HIDDEN state. I then delete question slides from all other scenes, and direct the users to the requisite question slide in the question scene and back. I use variables to turn whatever language has been chosen to be visible on the question slide.

In case youre still reading this and understood what I wrote, you can see that this is a lengthy process. Is there an automated setting for this possible?

Cheers

I forgot to say, I have to do this because in order for the e-learning to pass data through to the LMS as well as get a Completed status, I have to set completion to TRACK BY RESULT SLIDE and have all the questions answered.

I cannot keep the questions in different languages in their respective scenes because this creates multiple copies of the question slides, and the User will never get a completed status as they will never answer all questions X 11.

Okay now I am sure i have completely confused any good samaritan reading this. Oh well.

Hi Jay,

Not confused - but that sounds like a big set up! There isn't an easier method that I know of, so hopefully if someone in the community has had to do similar they'll be able to share with you here. I suspect it's not a course you can share being a compliance training, but perhaps you can share more details of the steps you went through to set this up for other users who may come across this thread.

Hi Jay! This is a fairly old post but I am trying to do a similar thing as you - a multi-language course with one set of questions. I am having a hard time with the variable part of this. I set a T/F variable for each language choice and indicated on the language chooser slide to change the variable to T if button is selected (that jumps them to the scene with that corresponding language content). The variable does not stay T when I move to a different scene so I am confused about how to make this evaluation on the Question slides. Can you share how you set that up? Thanks.

As far as your variable question, it sounds like the variable isn't sticking once you move to the appropriate scene as it should. Are you comfortable with sharing your .story file for testing? You can share it publicly here, or privately with our support engineers. We'll delete it when we nail down what's going on!
