My Templates - Adding and deleting slides from a .storylinetemplate file

Apr 03, 2023

Hi everyone,

Often while developing a project, I will think back to previous projects and try to remember where I created a particular slide to re-use. Then I will import that slide(s) into the current project. Sometimes it is easy to remember, and sometimes it isn't. I may end up opening several projects to find the slide layout I was thinking of. Time waster! So I decided to create a project of 'my favourite' slides, e.g. front covers, drag and drops, click and reveals, etc. The aim is to have one file with all my favourite slides in one location. Then I thought about using the 'My Templates' within Storyline. I saved the file as .storylinetemplates, and this works brilliantly. But then I thought, what if I had a separate .storylinetemplate file for each topic e.g. front covers, drag and drops, click and reveals. However, I found, I can’t open the actual .storylinetemplate to edit it. So how do I edit, add or delete slides from .storylinetemplate files? Am I required to resave these files as a .storyline file, make the relevant edits and then re-save them as .storylinetemplate files? Thank you, Nerina

Hi Nerina,

That's a great question! I understand you want to know how to edit your Storyline template file. If you want to change a custom template, you'll want to open the template and import the slides into a new Storyline project.

After making the changes, click File >> Save As. Use the same name as the original template to overwrite the old template or change the name to create a new template. Then use the Save as type drop-down to choose Storyline Template (*.storytemplate).

Thanks for reaching out!

Hi Nerina,

Would you mind sharing screenshots of where you are saving your .storylinetemplate files so we can check what's happening? I did a quick test on my end by saving a sample Storyline Template, but only one file was created. I'd like to see if I can replicate the behavior on my end by saving to the same exact directory that you're saving your files to.

Hi, Nerina!

Thanks for following up on this and sharing these screenshots!

When you save a .storytemplate file, you can choose the location, but we also add a backup in the Story Templates folder so that you can access the template in Storyline 360 when selecting My Templates. For example, I tested a few files by saving a template on my local drive (C: drive). I was then able to access the template there, and also from my Story Templates folder.

I hope this helps! If you have additional questions, please let me know.
