Play button at start up - no audio on course

Nov 28, 2022

Hello,

So a client recently approached me saying that the big play button keeps appearing on courses at start up. I'm about to tell them that's common behaviour, but I searched a bit more and, according to many discussions here, the play button should only appear when there's audio or any kind of media in the course.

The thing is that this client's courses have absolutely no audio or video either. They are just plain simulations where the user has to click through different buttons to learn how to use an app. In the first slide of each course there's only a few images and two buttons for the user to choose if they want assistance or not (assisted slides have a text explaining what they are supposed to do). These courses do have the classic player, because modern player doesn't work for the client, if it makes any difference.

I'm not sure I understand the behaviour of this play button correctly, so I'll write what I read in points:

  • Play button appears at start up when there's media to be played
  • If the user has already visited said course, no button appears
  • Courses with no media should start automatically

That's about it, but I'm not sure if this is updated to november 2022 and if something about it has changed.

I would really appreciate any help.

Thanks!

Hi Everyone!

I'm happy to share that we just released Storyline 360 (Build 3.83.31444.0) which includes the fix for the bug where a play button shows even if there is no media file on the first slide and there is a closed caption file.

Now all you need to do is update Storyline 360 in your Articulate 360 desktop app to take advantage of the newest bug fixes and features!

If you run into any issues, please don't hesitate to reach out to our team by submitting a support case.

Hi Mica,

The discussions you read are correct. Usefully that's common behavior if the course starts with any type of media. That's strange that it's happening with no media. Have you tried the workaround listed here?

Would you be willing to share your file here or with our support engineers privately in a support case so we can take a look?

Thanks for reaching out!

Hello John! Sorry for the delay. It's been some hectic weeks around here.

I haven't tried that workaround, but as there was no audio in any slide, it was confusing (I did check that thread before though, but as it didn't apply to our courses, I didn't bother). Testing it in the final environment is a bit complicated though, as it needs to go by the client, but I'll send them the test run and see how it goes.

I'm attaching one of the course files here (there's many). We're not publishing it in scorm for our client (we're publishing in web), because for the way these need to be distributed it wouldn't be the best option.

If you open a support case for this issue let me know so I can keep an eye on it.

If this is indeed a bug, I hope it gets solved soon :)

Have a great day!

Great! I just saw the email (it ended up on my junk folder), so I'll keep an eye out.

Just as FYI, this is the site our client is uploading the content to (https://www.mayoresactivos.com.ar/PracticasbnaMAS). It's a free, open project for elderly people so they learn to use a banking app (as well as ATMs and home banking), and where they say are seeing the play button (I have tried it on different devices and can confirm).

I have sent the demo file to our client with the workaround and see how it goes for them. Meanwhile I'll just sit tight.

Thank you for your assistance!

I am suddenly having this same issue. I have loads of courses that are the exact same as the one I loaded up today and out of nowhere, it's giving me the big black screen with the white play button....even though there is NO audio or video on the first slide. There IS a video on the second and third slides, but not on the first. And the user has to click a start button to go on to the second slide. Again, all other courses just like this one are not giving me this problem. Also, this is happening in Chrome, Edge, and Safari. I've also tried the tip to put a blank slide at the very beginning....this did not help. Is this an Articulate issue? Any ideas on how to fix it?

Hi Nelson!

Sorry to hear you've also been affected by this issue!

I can confirm that rolling back to Storyline 360 version 3.81.31200.0 is a valid workaround. I've included you in the bug report so you can be notified as soon as a fix is in place.

Thank you for your patience, and I'm sorry if this has been slowing you down.
