Preview of Return to incorrect questions not working properly

Jan 07, 2019

Can anyone help me, I am new to Storyline 360, so I maybe doing something very stupid.  I am adding a Q&A section to a 'What's it all about' training session.

The answer to the first question should be that the trainee selects all the checkboxes.  If they do not select 'all' then they return to the question and should check all boxes.  In preview, if the user does not check all boxes the second time round, then it advances to the next slide; this is a incorrect action but I don't know how to stop it happening.

The same should be for the second question but the last answer should not be ticked.  Again if you answer it incorrectly twice it moves onto the last slide.  I included the last slide as an example (it works correctly).  What am I doing wrong?  I do not want to go on adding question slides until this gets resolved.

I attach my problem slides/storyline.  Thank you in advance.

Hi Derek,

Thanks for sharing your slides, and I started to take a look but wanted to confirm a few things:

  • You've set each slide to submit and show the layers when FeedbackS11 is equal to True, but that appears to only be set on the results slides. In that setup, you'd never be able to submit the questions.
  • Slide 1.2 was marking as "correct" when I selected all checkboxes, but you mentioned that one should only be the first 4 checkboxes selected?
  • I don't see any triggers set to advance the learner to the next slide after 2 entries.
  • Also, it looks like you're using a Pick Many survey question, vs. a quiz question. If you were to use the latter, that would limit the attempts and show the correct layers without the additional triggers - so perhaps that'd work easier for you!

Let me know if you can shed light on the above or have additional questions!

Hello Daniel and Ashley, thank you for your feedback.  Daniel, I will use your tip later, the 'story' I attached was only part of many other slides and it appears I may of selected the wrong question type.

Ashley, we intend to have some sections that are instructional and some that are assessing the users actual learning level, so some sections will require a submit requirement whilst others will allow them to return and complete a question without judgement.  This is where the point of advancing to the next slide comes in.  After the trainee makes their selection, we want to give them an appropriate answer 'pop-up' and then send them back to the 'reset' questions and let them enter the correct answers.

This is where I have an issue in my designed slides, on the second time around, even if you answer them incorrectly, they advance to the next slide automatically.

So basically, in the first slide I want them to check all the boxes before allowing them to advance to the next slide; making them go around and around until they do.

In the second slide, they must leave the last question un-checked before advancing to the next slide.  Once they have completed a further three questions correctly, we then want to record they have completed the training and only have a record of completion rather then a grade.

I do intend to attend a local training course, but I need budget approval, so ….. : )

Hello all.  Thank you Phil, I tried your suggestion using a graded question.  For what ever reason, I am not getting this.  I have tried many combinations and test tries, but each time it gets stuck in a loop.  For clarity, each question (2 off in the attached example) requires all but the last answer to be checked.  The response for selecting a few or all should be in this case, the last line is 'Sorry incorrect … try again.  When the trainee selects all but the last answer then the "correct.. move on etc" box should appear.  Can some HERO help me by correcting my mistake or send/direct  me an example

Thanks, Derek for sharing an updated file. I took a look at this example, and although you've set it up as a question, I'm not seeing any of the items tagged as correct. Before I made any changes, I wanted to walk you through what I was seeing so I recorded a quick video with Peek here.

Let me know if this helps or you need some additional guidance!

Hello again Ashley and Phil.  I've done it (with your help of course) !!!.

At some stage I did 'check' the correct answers but I think that I set the 'State' incorrectly.  The rollover colours has been corrected, I was concentrating on the Q&A section first.  I just now need to find out to how set the colours/templates for rollovers etc.  If you know a good link then please send me one.

Thank you again, for all your help,  Great support from STAFF and HERO's

Extra note:  I found that when duplicating a slide to use a standard format, I change the correct answers, the state changes to selected, change the state to normal and the 'Form' changed all the answers to unchecked.  I then had to recheck the correct answers.  This is probably what was creating a issue in what I was doing before.  At least I know what I have to check each time.  Again, thanks.

Hello Alyssa

Please find attached edited copy and the URL to the original longer version. https://360.articulate.com/review/content/287ad592-8b27-4b1e-a67e-a4603db66457/review .

The reason for both is that you can sometime duplicate the slide directly and other time you need to paste. This can be seen in the URL version and I have supplied an edited version so that you can see the change in 'States' I missed out the issue which sometimes you get with it changing to selected rather than Normal. What didn't happen this time is the 'check boxes' in form view is change to 'unchecked'

I hope this helps to understand a bit of frustration I have been getting regarding this.

Hi there, Derek.  Thanks for sharing the screencast.  I could see how frustrating it has been for you from the very beginning of that Peek where you are having trouble reliably duplicating a slide.  😕

About your extra note regarding the states of the answer choices:  Correct answers will have an initial state of Selected when you're in slide view.  If you toggle those states, Normal will "uncheck" the correct answer in Form View, and Selected will "recheck" the correct answer.  This will happen regardless of whether the slide is duplicated.

Have you done a fresh installation or a repair of Storyline lately?  The lack of response when trying to duplicate a slide shouldn't be happening, and you shouldn't have to deal with that frustration and loss of productivity.

To address your question a few posts back about editing rollover colors, check out our color formatting help here.  You can create your theme colors to apply across all of the slides so that you don't have to waste time formatting individual slides.  I hope that helps a little!

Hello Crystal,

Thank you for your reply. As an ex IT manager, I understand that things do not always go as planned and that you often learn by making mistakes and overcoming problems.

I will try a repair and if that does not work, I will do a re-install. If I still have the same problems, which route should I take for support/feedback.

Anyway, thank you for such great support, the UK to US delay has not been a real problem.

Best regards

Derek
