Quiz results to dictate where a learner goes next

May 26, 2020

I want my results slide to direct the learner to either retake the quiz if they fail it (much like the retake quiz button but automatically when they click next) or to move onto the next slide if they pass it when they click next. My triggers to go back to the start of the quiz is working, but it won't let me set the trigger to reset the quiz to take it again. The move to next slide if they pass trigger is not working but also takes them back to the start of the quiz. Can this even be done. I am new to Storyline and triggers. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Hi Sarah, you were close with the functionality, but I think the reset should be taken outside of the next button. I think this will function better with an intermediary page which you can direct the learner to when they fail. The only purpose of this slide is to reset the quiz and direct the learner to the first question. See the attachment, it might make more sense.

The alternative method is to just add buttons to the Success and Fail layers, and remove the usual Next/Previous navigation from the slide, by opening up the slide properties.

Hi, Sarah,

FYI:  Here's what I typically do on a Results slide.

  • On the Failure layer:
    • Add a trigger to Disable the Next button when the timeline starts. (A disabled Next button makes it obvious to the user that they can't advance.)
    • Include a Retry Quiz button. This should have two triggers: one to Reset Results and one to return to the first question in the quiz. (IMHO, it's helpful to have the button named based on what going to happen. Some users could be confused if they click "Next" and then find themselves back at the start of a quiz that they just finished.)
  • On the Success layer:
    • Add a trigger to Enable the Next button when the timeline starts. This ensures that the button will work even if the user failed the test on a previous attempt.
