Reference the learner's name with the free trial.
Hello! I am building a course with the free trial and I am trying to use a reference for the learner's name. I did everything as I was supposed to (I believe...) and it's not working. The reference is there and I can add it to my slide but when I preview my course it does not show. Is it possible that it is not possible to do it with the free trial?
Thanks for your input!
Have a nice day, Karine

Storyline works the same whether you're using it during a free trial or have a paid license.
Troubleshooting this situation would just be guessing without seeing the .story file. Here are the best practices for uploading that:
- Only include slides that are related to the problem.
- Be sure objects, layers, motion paths, and variables have meaningful names.
- If there is proprietary content, replace or delete it. For example, replace proprietary text with “ipsum lorem” text.

Hello Judy! I will try that, thanks!
The reference is only going to show if the variable has a value. I assume that you have a text entry box where the learned can enter their name.
And once they do that, the reference to that variable (make sure the text entry box is changing the right variable) will display.

Hello Tom!
Yes, I was expecting that so I check with preview (F12) and I also published the unfinised course just to see and in both cases, when I enter my name, I don't see it in the following slides. But I do see on my slide in storyline the reference for the name.

To piggyback on Tom's help above...if you try to view the page without including the page where the variable is answered, your page will also be blank.

It would help if you would attach your .story file here, so someone can take a look at it.

- Be sure to clearly describe the following in the file and/or in the post with the attachment (if you haven’t already done so):
- What you want to happen
- What is not happening that should happen
- What is happening that should not happen
- What you have already tried

Thank you everyone for your input. I am sorry I am not fast at replying. I did not know how to join only the slides with the reference so this is my full course. I created the reference on slide 2.3 and used it on 2.4 and 2.9 to name a few.
Thanks you so much!
The trigger on 2.3 sets the "TextEntry" to the typed value.
The reference on 2.4 and 2.9 is to a different variable titled "Firstname"
You either need to make the 2.3 trigger change the value of Firstname or you need the other slides reference "textentry"

Hello Tom! Thanks for helping :)
I am not sure this is the problem because I changed the name recently and it was already not working before. Anyway, I deleted the text entry on 2.3 and the reference on 2.4 and 2.9 and started over. I have only 1 text entry and 1 reference. It is still not showing on the preview. I can write my name in the text entry but nothing is reference on 2.4 and 2.9.
Did I get your explanation? I am new to Articulate (even to anything tech related... I am a former history teacher) and I don't always understand the jargon.
Did you figure it out?
