Restart slide timeline avoiding "Reset to initial state"

Apr 16, 2019

Hi all,

How is possible to restart the timeline of a slide layer without selecting the "reset to initial state" in the layer properties?

I have a slide with different slide layers, all of them having audios and buttons, when a slide is visited I change the state of the button to visited, so I can not select the "reset to initial state" option because otherwise all the buttons would change to the initial states and I would lose the visited state.

As all the slide layers have audios, when a slide layer is showed, the audio starts from the last point, not the beginning, that is the reason why I want to reset the timeline of the slide layer, to start the audio from the beginning.

After a lot of search in this forum I discover that the reason why the audio continues from the last point is because the layer option I have selected is "automatically decide", and this option is doing the following "If the layer contains interactive elements, such as buttons or other objects that have a visited/selected state, Storyline resumes the layer where it left off previously.".

So, now the question is how can I make the timeline or the audio starts from the beginning without losing the states of my objects.

Thanks!!!!

There can be many ways to do this but as your initial concern is button states so what you can do is set a trigger to be true when timeline of layer starts and change the state of the button to visited when timeline starts of that particular slide if the variable is true. Then you can set the layer state to reset to initial state. That way the button state remains visited and audio plays from beginning.

Hello, Allende!

If you try Jennifer's suggestion and need a little extra help, we'd be happy to lend a hand!

Simply copy your slide into a new file, then share the slide with us here. Since this is a public forum, you can remove proprietary information from the slide before sharing it.

Keep us posted on how it goes!

Thanks for your answer Jen, it is how i solved the problem in my project, using variables and changing the state of the objects depending on those variables.

But then I have to change the layer property to "Reset to initial state" and that is what I tried to avoid.

Does it mean it is not possible to restart the timeline? The only way is to use  "Reset to initial state"? Using variables is ok, but if you have various slide layers with some objects inside each one, the number of variables to take into account make to spend a lot of time.

Hey, Carolina. Happy to help!

Have you had a chance to check out this tutorial on How to Disable the Next Button Until Learners Finish Interacting with a Slide? It's for Storyline 1, but you can use this method for any version!

If you're still at this roadblock, could you share your .story file here? We'll have a closer look and let you know what we find! 😊

Hello Jen,

I have a custom menu that needs me to "reset to initial state" on a slide that has many radio buttons across layers...

Could you please give me some advice on how to save these states and their variable values and still rest the slide?

Thank you!!!!
