Results Slide to Calculate Results based on a different set of questions at each attempt

Nov 09, 2016

We are using Storyline 1 to build a quiz (only a few content slides, rest are question slides).  We have all our questions in question banks (9 banks in the project, based on separate learning outcomes/scenarios). There are more than 100 questions across the various banks, out of which 40 need to be served up randomly for each attempt of the quiz.  The quiz has three attempts, and the passing score is 80%.

We created a scene (called Attempt 1) and inserted draws from these question banks. There is a Results slide at the end of the Attempt 1 scene. This slide has been set up to calculate results for all the draws in the Attempt 1 scene. So far, all good. (see screenshot below).

Is there a way I can configure the Results slide so that it resets after the first attempt of the quiz and then instead of calculating results again from the draws in the Attempt 1 scene, it calculates results from question draws in another scene, called Attempt 2 (see following screenshot)? I can make the Results slide jump to this new scene called Attempt 2 on the second attempt (using variables and conditions) but I cannot find a way to set it up to calculate results for different questions, based on different attempts. In the following screenshot, if I select all the draws from all the scenes (Attempt 1, Attempt 2, Attempt 3), then the Results are all messed up (because the total number of points is calculated by aggregating all the points across the different attempts). I want the total points to be reset after each attempt, and based on a different set of questions each time.  There is a reason why the project needs to have separate draws for each attempt (long story), and I cannot use the same draws across multiple attempts (although I realise that the whole purpose of a question draw is to randomize questions across attempts). It still needs to be this way, because our scenario is quite complex and finding a way to make the Results slide work would be much simpler than re-structuring the project.

I am not sure if I have been able to explain the scenario clearly. It’s a bit complex and am happy to provide a copy of my project to clarify this.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Deblina,

There isn't a way to reset the results to pull from a new set of questions - as all the questions would need to be tracked by that results slide and using that slide to report it to your LMS. You could have more than one results slide in a course, so associate each question bank with a results slide -but again you'll need to role those up into one main results slide to use for tracking/reporting purposes using one of the settings here.

Thanks, Ashleigh. Unfortunately a Results slide that aggregates the scores from other Results slides won't work for us because we don't want the scores to be added. We would like to see the scores for each of the attempts. The only other option I can think of is to have three separate quizzes for the three attempts, each with its own results slide (one connecting to another).

In relation to Results slides, I had another question. At the moment, the default setting is such that the Review Results shows the results for all the questions that are linked to the Results slide. Is there a way to change the setting so that the Review would only show the results of a few selected questions and not all?  We don't want all the questions to show up when reviewing results but only a few. Thanks.

Hi Deblina,

We've seen a few examples where customers set up the review (or even the retry) to only show certain slides or questions, say skipping questions that users got correct or didn't answer. This example is a bit older, but the same type of set up and behavior should work as it'll allow you to control it through the use of variables.

Hi Ashley and Leslie. Unfortunately, Mike's option did not work for me. I thought I did everything he said he did. Perhaps it does not work when using question banks (draws from question banks). I don't have slides for any of my questions. The only slides I have are question draws and I tried to add the Review trigger to those slides (as he suggested). But that did not work,

Thanks for your help, though.

Sorry to hear that set up didn't work for you Deblina - I can't think of (or find) examples of how this would be set up within a question bank draw, as the draw is determining where the user goes next vs. the actual slides/layers. Perhaps sharing what you've got set up so far may help inspire the community with another idea or solution for you based on the limiting factor of the question banks.

Hi Deblina,

I see that you and Ryan were continuing to discuss this issue and that it's been something he determined you'll likely need to use a bit more customized set up either randomizing or using one of the unsupported methods as Ryan linked to below:

Randomizing the quiz is the best option for what you are trying to achieve for your course. However, the result slide can only compute based on the number of question or question banks being tracked.

You might be able to get your LMS to track using one of the unsupported methods described here:
