Review-Retake-Retry Quiz

Nov 05, 2018

Hello,

I have used Quiz results (Inspire) from the content library. During testing in the LMS- the Retry button did not work. However, it may be because I am asking it to do something it may not be able to do without variables??

The quiz is dispersed throughout the module. There are 15 questions ( 3 questions in between each topic category).  I only want the user to answer the questions that are incorrect, and I want them to magically appear. I do not want the user to go back throughout the module to find those answers he/she got incorrect.

Am I asking too much? or am I asking for a whole lot of work? lol

Any help, suggestions out there?

Hi,

I can't attach the original one, apparantely both the file and the zip file is too big to send however, I have the same issue with this one, so perhaps this will be helpful to look at? This one has the 5 question assessment at the end of the module, but it still does not allow the user to retake the incorrect questions.

Hi Ashley,  I am in a groundhog day loop, or so I feel. I am struggling with this retry quiz question concept- becoming feverish :)  Despite reviewing the discussions and videos - I cannot seem to get to the end on this.  One thing that may be contributing to this???...- does the "feedback" by question/choice need to be engaged?  I currently have ALL quiz questions set to feedback none ( hence no incorrect/correct layers). I can get the quiz to retry-but of course it just goes through all the questions right or wrong, so I assume I must have the feedback set to something other than none?

Hi Lisa,

Before you head down the path of Punxsutawney Phil (which never ends with an early Spring!), let's see if we can figure out what's causing the roadblock!

Are you using the method Alyssa described with the variables? You'll want to look at trigger order so that those variables to identify if the learner answered it correctly appear in the trigger panel list before any triggers to jump to the next slide. If you're not sure, can you share a few screenshots of your trigger window or a copy of your .story file here with us?

That'll be the best way to help redirect you and get this back up and running!

Hi there Lisa!

You're spot on! Because you're not using feedback layers, we'll have to use a slightly different method. I made some changes to your file, and here's a summary of what I did:

  • You already set up a unique number variable for each of the 5 questions - great job!
  • If the learner selects the correct answer, we want to adjust the variable to = 1 using this trigger.
  • Then when the learner clicks Retry, we want Storyline to skip any question slides the learner answered correctly. To do that, we'll need these two triggers.

Check out the new triggers I added to your file, and let me know if you have any questions about them!

Hi again Alyssa.

I applied all the triggers/variables to another training module I have completed. it seems to work well however, this training module is designed with quiz questions in between learning segments. In total there are 15 quiz questions.

When I tested the assessment, I am redirected back to the question, but after selecting submit, it brings me to the next slide (in some cases it is a content slide) .

Are there additional triggers I need to use when the assessment is disbursed throughout a module and not just all at the end?

Regards peace and blessings, Lisa

Hi Lisa!

Yes, you will need additional triggers to skip content slides. Here's a run down of how you'll set that up:

  1. Go to the first content slide after Quiz Question 1.
  2. Add this trigger on that content slide: Jump to slide [next quiz slide] when the timeline starts on [current slide] if Question1 = is equal to 1.
  3. Repeat steps 1 & 2 for any other content slide that follows a quiz slide.

Give that a try, and let me know how you make out!

Hi Alyssa,

Happy Monday! Thank you for your support and assistance. I am hoping I understood your instructions correctly.  I have attached an excel sheet that shows where/how I placed the triggers. I wasn't sure but assumed that I would change the variable (question) on each "bucket"? The last bucket of questions is followed by the results slide , would I need the same trigger there as well?

I did notice during testing that I can see the slides appear/disappear as they are responding to the triggers, is there a work around for this? I would just like to see the process of this module/assessment flow a bit smoother if possible?

Thank you,

Lisa

Hi Lisa! Really cool idea to share your triggers in an Excel file! That helped me to get a clear picture of your setup.

Based on what I'm seeing there, I think you need to adjust the variables in your trigger conditions. Take a look at the changes I made in the attached Excel spreadsheet. After making those changes in your file, let me know if it's still not working quite right, and I'll take a closer look. And if you can share the Storyline project file with me, that would be even better!

Regarding the slides appearing/disappearing as they are responding to the triggers, there isn't a way around that. You'll see those slides quickly "flash" on screen before jumping to the next slide.

Hi Lisa,

After looking more closely at your project, I'm thinking it would be better to use a True/False variable to skip content slides during quiz retry.

I created a new True/False variable called "Retry". When the user clicks the Retry button, the Retry variable will change to True. I then added the Retry variable to the trigger conditions, like this:

Let me know if this works better!

Lisa D

Hi Alyssa,

Thank you! I reviewed the new variable. Just to help me understand, (as this is an area of opportunity for me) what is the theory going to a true/false variable? Why is this a better option? The outcome seems the same (to an untrained eye, like mine :).

When I reviewed the assessment answering incorrect/correctly I noticed that on Question 14- (slide 1.23)  it displays the radio button on the retry? I couldn't see any reason in the triggers panel that would cause this. Thoughts? Suggestions?

I am going to have some folks test out the module- and test the quiz out. I will let you know how we make out.

Thank you so much for this great learning opportunity!!! Your help and support are valued, dearly.

Hi Lisa! I'm happy to help! These custom configurations take time and testing, but working with stuff like this is fun for me. 😁

Initially we were using the numeric variables like Question1 to skip the content slides. However, this didn't work correctly because it was only skipping content slides if the previous question was answered correctly. I realized we needed a new variable that would skip content slides, no matter if the previous question was answered correctly or incorrectly.

So, I decided to use a true/false variable called Retry. Clicking the "Retry" button changes the Retry variable to True. Now Storyline will automatically skip content slides when the Retry variable is True. I hope that makes sense!

Good eye catching the issue on Slide 1.23. There's an incorrect variable on that slide. Notice the first trigger says, "...if Question1 is equal to 1.00." This should be Question14

Lisa D

Guess who :)

I am hoping one day  that I too will be happy for custom configurations. Until then, I rely on your energy.  Yes, your explanation makes sense, this was helpful to help me to get a better understanding and conceptualize.

So here is a wrench. I have answered 1 question for each set incorrectly. All goes well on the retry except I must re-do question 5 ( slide 1.10) despite answering correctly.

I have been testing quiz retry's all day (answering different ones correctly and incorrectly-so far this is the only hiccup I have come across :)

I couldn't find the where/what variable/trigger could be incorrect, perhaps I am overlooking something?

Hmm, there's something wonky with the Question5 variable. If you look in the variables window, it's a Text variable. All the other variables are Numerical variables. I'm not sure why that would make a difference in how the slide behaves during Retry, but it might be the culprit.

Try deleting that variable, then making a new Question5 Numerical variable. Here's a quick video to explain that process.

Lisa D

You were right! It seems that is what fixed the issue. Thank you. A few other things popped up- but because of all my learning from your teachings I managed to resolve them on my own!! Success!! We are going to send out on a soft launch trial, and fingers crossed we are issue-less.  Thank you again, this help was invaluable and extremely appreciated!!

Cheers, peace and blessings
