Saving variables to use in later course?

We have a series of Presenter/Quizmaker presentations that the user views sequentially.  Is it possible in the new Storyline to have the user enter a variable in the first presentation/course (e.g., user's name), automatically save that information somewhere, have the user close the first presentation, and pull the original response back in when they start the next presentation/course? Or, can variables only be used within a particular presentation (and are wiped when the user closes that presentation)?   If possible, is some sort of LMS still required to do this?

Sorry about the basic question - just trying to wrap my head around the exciting new features!  Thanks.
