size limits on imported closed caption files

Jun 28, 2021

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone had found some workarounds for getting larger closed caption files into Storyline 360 projects? I was told that acceptable vtt and srt files have a limit of about 38,000 characters, but I've had problems with even 35,000-character files.  There has to be an easier way than manually copying and pasting individual captions from the vtt/srt files - we're spending hours and hours on this!  Thanks!

No error message - just the closed captions never appear.  The first time I encountered this problem I sent my files to Articulate support for help.  That was when I was told about the size limit.  And they seemed to be right - when I cut my vtt file down to 35,000 characters, it loaded without a problem.  Articulate support said at the time they would log it as a possible bug, but I don't know what happened on your end after that. :)

Thank you for those details, Leigh!

I see that my teammate, Johnrey, was working with you in April and logged this behavior as a software bug. We are currently prioritizing other bug fixes for upcoming releases, so this hasn't made it on our roadmap yet. When it does make it on our roadmap, I'll be sure to update you in this discussion!

Hi Leigh,

I have great news to share! We no longer see this bug where the player Closed Caption button doesn't show in Preview if the characters in the CC file exceed 44,379. This is when using our latest version of Storyline 360 (Build 3.73.29831.0).

Please let us know if you're still noticing the issue, and we'll be happy to continue troubleshooting with you in a support case.
