Hi Hilary, if you haven't checked out Ashley's link, take a look. The link provides a guide for where you can change the settings on your pc. It's always advisable to use the recommended settings so try those first, but you can play around with scale and resolution and this will change the size of SL on your screen - but not using the recommended settings can impact on other things, so it's a bit of a trade off as to what will work best for you.

The hi res monitors don't play well with the UI in SL2. That's been fixed in SL3/360
