Slide layers not working properly

Mar 15, 2016

Hello E-learning Heroes,

I have been building e-courses in Articulate Storyline for 2 years now and I think it is a nice software, however, it has some random bugs that complicate my work and take too much of my time.

The most recent problem I experienced are the slide layers that do not always work correctly. I am building an e-course with several chapters. In the end of each chapter, there are two options - either the layer allowing user to continue to the next chapter appears, or the layer warning user to complete all sub chapters appears.

The problem is that the layer that is warning the user to complete the sub chapters first appears too late (5-10 seconds), or does not appear at all. Interesting thing is that this layer worked perfectly when implemented for the first time. However, for the second time - different e-course - it just stopped appearing on time.

I can not see any logical explanation for that as the other layer was built the same way and works perfectly (even when copied from other slides - copying layers appeared to be a problem for me before).

The only fix I had for this was removing the layer as well as object triggering the layer in the base layer and building it again from scratch, which is quite time consuming and frustrating.

Has anyone experienced the same issue? Do you have any suggestions on how to fix it?

Thank you very much and good luck to you all!

Hi Petronela,

Thanks for reaching out here and sorry for the issue you've run into. It sounds like the behavior is inconsistent in terms of showing the layer sometimes, sometimes later than expected and other times not at all? Is this only with previewing that you're seeing the odd behavior or is it with the published output as well? If you're only seeing it in preview have you already confirmed that you're working on  local project files as described here?

If rebuilding it from scratch is working, although it my be time consuming, it would indicate that something happened within the file it self such as an element of corruption. I'd also suggest looking at importing it into a new file following the steps here and testing out that version.

Hi Ashley,

Thank you for your response.

This only happened when previewing and I have not tested it in the exported file as I have not even thought of exporting a file that does not work properly. But I will definitely try it next time I experience this problem.

Now I made everything work by rebuilding those non functional layers - however, in some cases, it was necessary to rebuild them several times - the layer would only work after being deleted and created again for 3-4 times, which I find really odd.

Hi Petronela,

Sometimes the file can become corrupted or have unusual things happen to it, especially if you're not working locally - so I'd always look at importing it into another file to see if that resolves it. Then you could preview and publish to see if there is any other difference.

If you continue to see odd behavior across the board in Storyline I'd look at going through the repair outlined here.
