State, Trigger, and Variable practice
Aug 07, 2012
Hello everyone,
I created a practice SL file to learn STATE and TRIGGER functions, please see attached.
Concept 1: Enable users to see info about an object when the mouse hovers over it, then jump to a different slide when users click the object.
I was able to get this to work only by placing the mouse hover trigger on the base slide to show a different layer with each object. I had to create the jump to slide triggers in the Feedback Masterslide otherwise it would not work. I'm not sure if my solution is the most efficient method but it was the only way I can make it work.
Concept 2: Enable users to see which object has been selected by showing the Visited state of the objects through the use of variables..
After trying variables and triggers, I could not get this function to work. Please advise.
Thank you,

Hi Daniel -
Looks like you're off to a good start!
Did you know that you don't have to use variables to track and show visited states? That's right! Because visited states are a built in property, you can show visited states without adding any variables--the states will display immediately when clicked.
Here's a quick overview of how you could rework your slide by taking advantage of slide layers:
David,
Excellent feedback and great recommendations. I'm really glad I took the time to create the example Story file, thank you so much for creating a screenr for the response - its a BIG help.
Thank you,
This is a great way to get a handle on more complex aspects of the program.
You're welcome, Daniel. I'm glad that helped.
Steve's totally right about how to get a handle on Storyline--you gotta jump in, try some stuff and share it back with the community for feedback.
So, please keep the questions and samples coming--we're more than happy to pick 'em apart and share ideas.
