State will not change.

Hello, I have a menu with three characters. Two are from the  Storyline 360 library. The other one is an image from another source. I created a variable set to false. I then created a trigger on one slide that says that once the timeline starts, change the variable to true. I then went to the character on the menu slide and set a trigger that reads, change the state of "character" to the state that I created, when the variable changes to false. I created a similar action on another character  (not Storyline 360 character) on the same slide with the same steps, and it works fine, but this one will not. I can't figure out why. Any ideas?
