I am trying to change the visited state to be a different colour and I cannot for the life of me work out how to do it. What is the secret? When I press editing states I can't seem to edit them.
State of what? Not all objects have states. IIRC you can modify states of text boxes and other shapes, pictures and buttons.
When you are on the States tab and click the Edit button, there is a drop down list to the right of all objects that you can manipulate. Have you tried to select it like that?
