Storyline 3: Can't work in full-screen.

Mar 26, 2018

I open Storyline 3 and use it in full-screen mode, as usual. However, starting last week, after doing one or more minimize/maximize actions, the Storyline Window begins to get narrower than full screen (it usually starts by being about one inch narrower along the left edge of my display). As I continue working in Storyline, and doing more minimizing/maximizing, the window will shrink horizontally even more until it reaches a size that is about 75% the width of my display (height of the window is not affected, only width). Once this automatic gradual shrinking of the Storyline window starts I am unable to do anything to get a full screen view of my Storyline window. Please note that this is when I'm working in Storyline, not in a published course, and it happens in all Storyline files I have opened and worked in since the problem began.

I did do the recent Storyline 3 update a week or two ago when it became available. This window-shrinking problem is exclusive to Storyline - I do not experience the same thing in any other program (ppt, WORD, etc.).

Does anybody have any ideas about what could be causing this? Thank you very much!

Hi Sheldon! Sorry you're running into this. I haven't seen similar reports of this problem, so I'm glad you reached out.

Can you tell me a little more about your set-up?

  • What version of Windows are you using?
  • Is Storyline 3 installed to your local hard drive?
  • What Windows display settings are you using?
  • Are you opening Storyline 3 on an external monitor?

Hi Sheldon and welcome to E-Learning Heroes :)

Sorry to hear that you are having difficulty in Storyline 3.

You mention that you cannot use full screen anymore.

Are you using the option in the window:

I've not heard of a similar issue and I just toggled mine a few times while working and cannot recreate what you are describing either.

Curious if conducting a repair of your software would help.

Thanks for your reply, Alyssa. Info for you:

  • Windows 10
  • Storyline 3 is installed to my local hard drive
  • 1920 x 1080 display setting
  • Yes, I'm opening it on an external monitor. I've never had a problem with Storyline 3 in either of my external monitors. I just spent five minutes playing with Storyline on my laptop, and I DID NOT experience the "gradually shrinking Storyline window" problem that I do have on both external monitors (so that was a good question for you to ask!).

Thank you for reaching out, Leslie.

Yes, I am using the option in the window in your graphic. Nobody else in my department is having the problem I am having, and I never had it before, so a repair of the software may be what I need (although Alyssa asked me about my external monitor(s) and it seems that Storyline is working fine on my laptop, just not on my external monitors, so I don't know if a software repair would have an effect on that).

Hi there Sheldon,

Thanks for those details! While I haven't seen a report of this exact issue before, I have heard of external monitors being the culprit for wonky behavior in the past. I'm having trouble recreating the problem from my end, and I'm wondering if you can help me.

Could you record a screen recording of your Storyline window shrinking and share the recording with our team by clicking here?
