Storyline 3 - Multiple response question not showing incorrect feedback

Jan 03, 2019

Hi All!

I'm having a bit of difficulty with a few of my multiple response questions. Each of my question slides has a "Correct!" and "Incorrect" feedback layer.  When previewing the course if only a single response is selected, or the wrong combination of responses selected and the submit button clicked, no feedback shows, it just advances to the next slide.  If I select the correct responses, I receive the "Correct!" layer feedback. All of the single response questions give correct or incorrect feedback properly. Is there something easy I'm missing that needs re-linked or changed?

Thanks!

Hi, Becky. Your design looks great – thanks for sharing!

I did notice the behavior you're seeing when previewing the file. Here's a quick Peek! It looks like the first question allows for 1 Attempt which is causing some wonkiness with the Try Again layer. Changing the number of Attempts to Unlimited for both questions should do the trick.

Have a look at your attached modified file, and let me know what you think! 😊

Good morning, Becky, and oh no! So sorry this oddity is still lingering in the file.

I set both questions to 3 Attempts and Unlimited where I'm unable to reproduce the wonky behavior during Preview/after Publish:

Do you experience this behavior with the published output, or just during Preview? Also, is the content saved on a local hard drive (typically the C: drive)? Saving to a network drive can cause similar issues, so I'd like to rule this out as the culprit.

We'll get to the bottom of this together!

So I made the change, but I don't know if that did anything. I changed the quiz questions from 1 attempt to 3 attempts after that to test as well, and now they seem to work. The review questions (same questions as in the quiz) are still not giving feedback when wrong. They were already set to unlimited attempts. I tried toggling them to 3 attempts and closing / reopening Storyline, but still no feedback.

Thanks for keeping me posted, Becky!

When you say "review question feedback," are you referring to the text seen here on the Correct and Incorrect layers?

Additionally, did you have any luck with my published output? (Link 1: 3 Attempts and Link 2: Unlimited Attempts). If you're able to share the link to your output, I'd love to compare the behavior to mine to nail down that culprit. Talk soon!

Hi Katie!  Yes, I'm referring to the Incorrect/Correct text on the slides when I said review question feedback above.

Your published output shows fine. Here's what I get when I publish unlimited attempts to LMS and upload :

Still no feedback when the multiple response question is answered incorrectly. Think I may try recreating it from scratch and see if that produces any different outcome.

Hi Katie!  Think I figured out where my issue is :) I recreated the question slide, set it to three attempts, and added a Try Again layer.  Now, I get feedback for answers that are incorrect and try again twice, and on the third incorrect answer it gives me the "sorry this is incorrect" and the continue button that is coded to jump to next slide. It was also telling me my Incorrect layer was a custom slide layer instead of just a normal incorrect layer. not sure if that had anything to do with it? Everything is working now! Thanks for all your help!

I am having a similar issue with the incorrect box not showing on any of my questions. I have read this feed and tried to change this but then i have another incorrect box added to my triggers. I have had templates created for my questions so need my incorrect box linked to the template incorrect not an additional one if that makes sense. Thanks

Hi Training,

It sounds like you're hoping to adjust the Incorrect popup that's appearing as a part of your feedback?  If you're using a custom template, you will want to look at modifying the built-in feedback masters to match as well.

If you're still having trouble, with your permission, I'd like to take a look at your project file to investigate what's happening. You can share it publicly here, or send it to me privately by uploading it here.

I’ll delete it when I’m done troubleshooting.

Just to let people know, I had this same issue where none of the feedback layers would show. I was using the standard Multiple Response graded question.

After a little bit of playing around, I found for some reason this question had the next and previous buttons instead of the Submit button which I have now changed in the slide setup and it is working perfectly.

Thought this might help people if they are experiencing the same issue.

I am struggling with the same issue. I have several multiple response questions in a course. If I answer correctly, the course branches to the correct feedback page as intended. If my answer is not correct, nothing happens when I click the submit button. This happens in preview mode and when published to review 360.

I saw someone's post about a template, so I checked and I have a blank template. I recreated the question with a question template. Now the issue is that when I submit an incorrect answer, it popups up a try again layer instead of branching to the feedback slide I set up on the question. I temporarily deleted the try again layer and now the submit button does nothing. The course is trying to force trying again even though I am not requiring it.

Has anyone found a way around this?

Update: Changing the number of attempts from unlimited to 1 solves the problem. However, I don't want to limit learners on this one question type if there's another way.

Hi Carol,

Happy to help!

To provide some added clarity, when a question is set to Unlimited attempts, only the try again layer will appear since the learner can attempt the question indefinitely. If there are limited attempts for a question, the incorrect layer will appear when they have maxed out on the number of attempts allowed.

An idea that I hope will help is to include at least three attempts for a question to allow the appropriate feedback layers to appear. For more details on the feedback options, please feel free to check out this guide:
