Are you using SL1 or SL2? I know in SL1 there was some issues with the published output in Word not being as crisp that our team is aware of - and there is still some clarity changes that occur in the Word output of SL2. Are you able to share some examples here of what you're seeing?
Also, you may want to look into the different sizes of thumbnails that you can use in the Publish to Word.
