Storyline Quiz Questions...

May 13, 2013

I have a 'final' quiz that is made up of several other Storyline quizzes that were imported into the final quiz.

Last week I received a message that a couple students had failed the quiz on the LMS even though they had missed fewer than the max required for a failing score.  So I investigated and found that out of the 72 questions imported, two of them were weighted as 10 while all the others were 1.  So I changed the two questions to 1 and republished and uploaded to the LMS.

Today, I received a message that some students have now scored more than 100%.  A screenshot shows one student scored 153%.

I've gone through the exam again and I can't see any obvious issues.  On the Results slide the quiz is set for an 80% passing score.

So I have a set of questions that may help.

1.  Due to the import of questions, there are a bunch of additional variables (resultspass.percent, rescultsscore.percent) that now show up in the list.  Although all these extra variables show 0 in the use column, I still can't delete them.

     a.  How do I delete these extra variables?

     b.  Could these extra variables be causing these issues?

2.  If these extra variables and not being used, what would cause a score of 153%?

3.  Also, we've noticed that many of the slides formatting has changed after we've edited them so that now there are some answers overlaying other answers.  We know we corrected these.  What does Storyline do to a file after one saves it that could/would change formatting?

Thanks for your assistance.

Welcome to the community, Paul!

Usually, if you're stuck with unused variables, you can import the slides into a new file. Those unused variables shouldn't carry over to the new course file.

Here's some information that may help when importing existing slides into a new file:

Importing from Another Storyline Project

Those variables could very well be what's causing the issue, but it sounds to me like there are answers providing additional points to the overall score. Importing into a new project may also fix this.

With your third question, it's difficult to say what's happening here. It sounds like your answers are overlapping each other, but you've already corrected the formatting, correct? Where is this showing up? Are the answers overlapping in Slide View, after you've published, or after you've uploading the course to your LMS?

Thanks Paul and welcome again!

We did import the questions and that did indeed pull all the other variables in.  That's where they came from to begin with.

The ability to delete the extra variables is greyed out so one can't do that even though we want to.

I'm not sure why the formatting changed, but yes, to your query we had indeed already formatted them and saved it.

So I'm really frustrated with this.  Thanks again.

Hi Paul,

Thanks very much for the information. Sorry for the frustration. Hopefully we'll be able to get this all cleared up for you.

Are you working off of a network drive, or any other external source, by any chance?  If so, try moving the project files to your local hard drive and see if that improves at least the saving/formatting issue.

  • Work on your local drive (your C: drive). Working on a network drive or a USB drive can cause erratic behavior, including file corruption, loss of audio, and other unexpected behavior.
  • You should also make sure the directory path to your project files and your published output is less than 260 characters (for example C:\Articulate).
  • Avoid using special characters, accents or symbols in your file names (this includes spaces and underscores).

Additional information regarding "Naming Files, Paths, and Namespaces" in Windows operating systems can be found in the following Microsoft article.

If that doesn't help, or if you're already working locally, we'd be happy to take a look at the file and see what's going on. You'll be able to attach the .STORY file on the second page of the following form:

Good morning Paul,

I was checking in on your case this morning and I see that Sid sent a message to you requesting that you try removing some code from your project.

If you've received his message, were you able to try the steps he suggested? If so, please respond to his email and let him know if you're still having trouble with the file.

If you have not received his email, please try checking your spam folders or filters in your email. If you still cannot find the message, just let me know. I'd be happy to send the email again.

Thanks very much Paul,

Christine
