Text with variable reference wrapping weirdly.
Feb 05, 2018
Hi community,
I have a variable called Learner that I'm using to capture the user's name at the beginning of the module. As I progress, I want to use the name using the %Learner% reference and it works; however, the text is wrapping weirdly. For example, if I have a text box that says:
Hey %Learner%, welcome to the team! I am Marcus. I have been a Tier 3 consultant for five years.
One of the first things you will need to learn is how to handle Escalated Calls.
So your first question is what makes a call an escalated call? To help you figure this out, you have three scenario cards below.
Move your mouse over each scenario below and read what it says, then select the scenarios you think are the escalated call scenarios.
Instead of rendering as
Hey Henry, welcome to the team! I am Marcus. I have been a Tier 3 consultant for five years.

Any thoughts on why this is occurring? I've tried adjusting the Text box options and the fonts. I've gone from Modern text rendering to Classic text rendering as well, but nothing works. I get the same when viewing in preview, published to Articulate Review and published for Web/LMS.
Thanks,
Henry

Hi there, Henry. Can you tell me how large your text entry box is? Is it taller than one line?
I found that if your text entry box allows for more than one line of text, using the Enter key will create a line break, and that will reflect in your reference.
Here's my example. Let me know if you find the same! I am happy to test your .story file as well.
Crystal, thanks for the reply. The input box is only tall enough for one row of text but it still causes the wrapping. I've removed the client information for confidentiality, but I still have the same issue. I had pre-populated the variable being used.
Hey Henry,
Thanks for sharing your .story file for us to take a look, but I'm not seeing a slide like the one you shared above. I only see the name you've shared on the desk in slide 1.3 and at the top box on the layer Swag Collection.
I fear I'm missing something that you wanted us to take a look at. Can you tell me how to replicate the issue?
Hi Leslie,
I removed some confidential info, so the text doesn't match. If you click on the agent icons for Larry and Eden you will see the issues.
Here's a link to the published version of this example.
Hey Henry,
There's definitely something buggy going on in your file. I published it and tested both the HTML5 and Flash outputs. In Flash, the text looks correct. In HTML5, it renders with a line break.

From here, I’ll meet with my team to take a closer look, so that we can verify this is a bug. Sometimes my team catches errors in my logic and we don’t have a bug after all. Of course if that’s the case, I’ll let you know!
Depending on priority and risk, some bugs can be fixed very quickly, while other bugs take longer to resolve. I’ll let you know as soon as we have an update. Thanks so much again for letting us know about this, and I’m sorry if it’s slowing you down.
I wanted to also mention that you can work around this issue for now by removing the bold, italics, and custom color from the variable reference. Hopefully that will get you by until we can find a fix for this bug!
Hi Community,
I have faced the same issue while working on 360. I have opened a support ticket for the same.
This is the case number: 01267557

Hi all,
Thanks for your patience as we worked on a fix for the issue where variable references with text formatting, such as bold or italics, could cause unexpected line breaks in HTML5 output. That fix is in today's update of Articulate 360!
Take a look at the release notes here, and you can install the latest update from the Articulate 360 desktop tray application by clicking Update.
Sorry for any spam.
This is the one I reported last month and Articulate fixed. Glad to see they’re responsive.
Hi Community,
This is to notify you that the issue has been fixed in the version 3.13. I tested the issue on this version and it seems to be working fine.
Thanks,
Vishnu.KH
Thanks Vishnu for testing it out and confirming the update is working as expected.
