The sequence of frames as they show in both story view and the player

Jun 05, 2015

In story view, I add frames as an afterthought that I want to place earlier in the course. Let's say a frame is numbered 18 and I want to insert it between frame 6 and 7.

Question 1 - how do I get the frames to renumber around the new frame?

Question 2 - how do I get the new frame to appear as frame 7 in the player menu?

Currently I can get my new frames to display in the correct place in story view by setting the "jump to" to go to that frame, but the number of the frame does not change. This jump to command does not change the sequence that displays in the player menu and so my new frames are at the end of the menu and not where they occur in the course.

Rather than set the slide to jump to slide #,  use jump to next.  In story view drag slide#18 to just below slide #6. A blue arrow will point to the name of slide #6, and when you release it, slide #18 will move there and will be renumbered.

Go to the player and choose Menu. Highlight a slide name, and below the menu use the up or down arrowhead to change its position.  This only changes the order in the menu, not in the playing order, and it does not change the number.

With a production environment and multiple writers, you do not want to rely on manual menu edits in the player and have no choice but to see the incorrect sequence in preview mode. They should be automatic. You also don't want to be forced to see faulty numbering in story view. Many people have commented on this over many years. It is a real problem for which there needs to be a real solution. Ashley, can you research what is being done to fix this and come back with an answer please. Is there a fix on the horizon, or a workaround OTHER than reconstructing your entire course into new file several times during development to get correctly numbered slides/frames in story view and so correct auto- menus in preview and publish modes.

Hi Christine,

The current options for modifying the menu and slide numbers are what I've listed above. We don't share information in regards to our product road map, future features, or timelines, so unfortunately I don't have additional information to share. You're welcome to share your thoughts on what you'd like to see by sharing thoughts in the form of a feature request as those go directly to our product development team.

I know I for one like the freedom to go into the menu and change it. I like to add headings, and control the indentions. If the player were to reset the menu automatically, I would lose that flexibility, so I view control over the menu as a feature, not a bug. This allows me to somehow ignore the slide (frame) numbers while I am previewing, knowing that moving them around in the story view will number them correctly (at least in SL2).

If I don't want a customized menu, then when I publish, I can add 3 extra clicks,( Player -> Menu -> Reset from Story), and the slides are on the menu in the order they are when they are viewed.

" I can add 3 extra clicks,( Player -> Menu -> Reset from Story), and the slides are on the menu in the order they are when they are viewed."

I don't seem to have communicated my problem well. I want to use auto menus in a production team environment.

However, when you( Player -> Menu -> Reset from Story), the slides are not in the order in which they are viewed. They are in the order in which they were created.

Maybe there is yet another setting I don't know about, but in Storyline 2, when I Reset from Story, I get the scenes in the order in which they were created, not in the order they display in the course. That is what I am trying to solve. Editing the menu is an additional feature and it's wonderful that it is there. I just want the unedited menu to reflect the course, not the development process - not the order of creation of the scenes. So does anyone know how, without re-building the course in a new document, we can get the auto menu to show the sequence of the course rather than the sequence of the creation of the course?

This is how it looks in Story View.

I have so far managed to find two ways of making Scene 18 appear below Scene 6.

The first is to replace Jump to Next in the slide with Jump to 18.1.

The second is to make it jump to The Scene, 18

Is there another way of making Scene 18 display under Scene 6 in story view?

Once I have made it appear where I want it in story view, I then want it to believe it IS scene 7 and appear in that position in both the auto menu and the printout.

But it doesn't. this is how it shows, both before and after I Reset the menu. I cannot work out how to get scene 18 to show as scene 7 without manually editing the menu. I have no idea how to get scene 18 to show as scene 7 using the export for translation function.

How do you cut and paste a SCENE? (Not a slide)

OK, that's it thankyou so much, Phil. Blindingly simple. Maybe there are easier ways than I have documented below, but this is how I have made it work.

Further explanation for anyone trying to do this, given how often this question has been asked and never answered in relation to a SCENE.

  1. Highlight the SCENE you want to move.
  2. Ctrl x to cut. You will see the original SCENE number go to "0" as it disappears.
  3. Highlight the SCENE below which you want to insert it.
  4. Ctrl y to paste. The SCENE and all subsequent SCENES will now be renumbered but it will be "orphaned" and so appear at the top of story view, but with the new number.
  5. There are two ways of re-attaching to make it display in the correct place in STORY VIEW. Either:
    • Highlight the preceding SCENE to see the link icon in the bottom right corner. Select "Link to scene".
    • In the preceding slide, select "Jump to [the number of the next slide]".

In the preceding slide, setting the "Jump to next slide" from within the slide does not re-attach it or display it in the correct place in STORY view.

Now the following will default to the correct order:

  • Preview menu
  • Publish menu
  • Export for translation.
