Is there a way to disable the timeline function or have it default to a long period of time? I would like the learner to be able to stay on the slide for as long as they would like.
The timeline should move you forward to the next slide only if there is a trigger set up to do that when it is finished. You can also extend the timeline by dragging out the part of the timeline that says "End" as shown in this image to as long as you would like.
If you are not using a next button to move forward, then the trigger to set up would be:

Sorry, also you may have to change the slide advances properties to 'By User' in Story View > Slide Properties.
