Tracking User progress

May 06, 2014

Hi:

I'm building a module where I want to track the user progress through various scenes in the course.  Each scene is represented by a BUTTON on the Main Menu.  The idea is that after a user completes the slides within a scene, an indicator on the Menu button shows the status.  Ideally there would be three:  NOT STARTED | IN PROGRESS | COMPLETE.  Is there a way to do this in Storyline?  In addition, I want to force the progress through the scenes in a linear fashion, but allow the user free navigation once they've completed the content.  I would appreciate any help in getting this working.

Thank you!

Hi Susan,

Are you going to be using the built-in menu? If so, scroll down on this page to the section entitled Change the navigation method

That might also affect how what you'd do to implement the not started/in progress/complete status to appear. I'm thinking you could have the status in the button states, and I'd partially built a very simplistic .story, but that would be one of my questions.

Also, I think I understand that you'd want the status to appear on EACH button after its associated lesson met the criteria?

Hi Susan

You can use variables to track when a learner has started and/or finished a particular chapter (or scene, depending on your structure), and use this to change the state of a menu button (or relevant image/icon) on your menu page.

Create a variable for each chapter,. e.g Scene3, and set to "not started" ... in the first slide of chapter 3, set Scene3 to "in progress" at the beginning of that slide's timeline ... on the last slide of chapter 3, set Scene3 to "complete" when the relevant actions/interactions have been completed.  On your menu slide, create links (images, icons, buttons or whatever) for each chapter THEN assign 3 states to them; not started, in progress and complete*.  Change the state of each one according to it's variable, e.g change state of menu button 3 to "not started" if Scene3 = "not started", and so on.  Be sure to set this change to trigger at the beginning of the slides timeline.

* you can create other images/icons to accompany your menu buttons if you prefer - it's entirely up to you.

There are other ways you can do this too, some of which are very create creative.

Best thing to do is have a play and see what you come up with.
