Translating a Storyline project, want to avoid exporting certain content to XLIFF

Aug 16, 2023

I have a Storyline project that has certain slides/layers in English that I don't want exported into the XLIFF file for translation. Is this possible? This feature appears to be an "all or nothing" feature, which does generally make sense for translating a project.

Hello Scott,

Thanks for reaching out!

Yes, you are correct in that there isn't a built-in way to exclude certain layers or slides from being included in the exported file for translation. The best way to do this would be to duplicate the course that you have for translation and then delete the sections that you don't want included in the translation file before doing the export

Once you get back the translation file from your translator, import it to the original course to complete the translation.

Hope this helps!

Joe, thank you very much for this info! This confirms what I had thought, and your solution makes good sense.

When exporting the XLIFF from the "duplicated & deleted sections" version of a file, are you saying that there wouldn't be any problems, then, importing the translated XLIFF in to the "original, no deleted sections" Storyline file? Is the sync'g up of text strings solid enough that these edits don't interfere with things? Because that's what my concern would be.

Hello Scott,

There shouldn't be any issues with importing the translated file into your original project file because each slide element has its own unique identifier that will prevent things from getting messed up. If you run into any issues with the translation, feel free to open a case with our support team here and we'll be glad to provide additional assistance.
