Trouble with adding a custom button

Hello.
I received an email today with the subject, "How to show learners related content in a single interaction" (http://learn.articulate.com/create-interactive-folder-tabs/),
I viewed the video and, as a Storyline newbie, I thought the best thing to do would be to try this technique out myself. However, I haven't been able to get very far.
Here's what is happening: I created a shape for the tab and copied it three times so I would have 4 tabs. Then I wanted to create a trigger to show a specific layer. I first had to make sure there was a layer to show; but as soon as I created the layer, the tabs I had created all became uneditable.
I can't figure out what I'm doing wrong. Can you help?
Thanks,
Norma

The tabs are on the slide the initial layer not the layer you just created. If you want the tab edited on that layer (disabling it) then you need to copy and paste the tab so it displays on the layer you are on.
Oranges
Apples
BaseLayer
If you created 2 layers they would be Oranges and Apples. The BaseLayer is on the bottom and what you want to select to copy or edit your tabs in. To edit the tabs you'll go back to BaseLayer. To add content to the Oranges tab you'll click oranges and then you won't be able to edit (or mess up) any of the BaseLayer content.
Sara,
Thank you so much for your quick reply. I am still struggling with this, but thanks to your comments I have at least been able to copy and paste the tabs from the base layer to a new layer.
Now to see how far I can get with the next steps!
Thanks again,
Norma
