Try-it Mode with Hover Menu

May 23, 2014

Hello,

I am building some training modules for a new application which has a hovering menu. Right now I am working on a tutorial which explains how to navigate around the website. The only problem is that the website has a hover menu and I want the user to be able to interact with that menu in "Try-it" mode. Is there a way to do this in Storyline so that if they hover over the right object they can move on? (Much like if you click the right thing you get to move on to the next slide)

Thanks for any help!

Hi Bria and welcome to Heroes!

If you've inserted a screen recording of a website as Try it mode - you'll see that trigger are created for each element that they'd click on, but there aren't any triggers for hovering over an object to show a new page. If the information is changing right on the screen (like a hover drop down menu) you won't see that same action within a try it mode - you'll just see the menu in the down state and any clicks the user has to make on the screen. You could add in your own custom triggers as there is an option for "when the user hovers the mouse over" and I would include a hotspot over the element that you'd like them to hover on.

Hi Ashley,

I ended up figuring out a solution that worked well for me. While recording, I just clicked on each portion of the menu instead of hovering on it. After that I went into the timing of the screen recording action and made it capture when the menu dropped down. Then I updated the triggers to "Play media Screen Recording Action" when "User hovers the mouse over" and used the hotspots that were provided from me clicking on the links rather than hovering over them. It ended up working well. I have a trigger to jump to the next slide when the media completes. This allows people to try navigating through the menu in a certain order which is specified by the hints. This works fine for try-mode. And I will be unable to do a test-mode with this training but that is fine.
