Updating to the Modern Player

Jan 06, 2023

Hey y'all,

So my team and I are going to update from the Classic Player to the Modern Player as courses get revisions. I trust that Articulate has made the transition between the players as smooth as possible; but are there any quirks for which we should watch out? Do accessibility and sizing play nicely as you move from one to the other?

Any tips are appreciated,

Pierre

Hi Pierre,

Great choice transitioning to the Modern Player! The only disadvantage, if you see it that way, is that in the Classic player, you can have topbar tabs on the right and left sides of the player. While in the Modern player, topbar tabs are always on the side of the player opposite the sidebar. For everything else, I would always go with the Modern Player.

Regarding accessibility, the light and dark themes of the modern player meet and exceed WCAG Level AA guidelines for visual contrast and color by default. On the other hand, you must choose colors with a contrast ratio of 4.5:1 or higher in the Classic player to meet accessible contrast.

The modern player always scales smoothly to completely fill the learner’s browser on every device and screen size, maximizing the available space, so there should be no problem with sizing. Please see the article below for details:

Let me know if that helps!

For those who find this thread in the future, the transition of our first 4 courses was incredibly smooth.

One issue  we faced was player design, and we are grateful to had waited until there was control over the color of the player. Prior designers had either intentionally manipulated the color of the Classic Player, or designed with the default Classic Player in mind, in such a way that the dark and light Modern player defaults were not sufficient for the aesthetics of our courses.

We did have to change the Player Font Scale. We have almost no users with mobile devices, and did get to test across the few screen ratios that we typically work with. There were some text clipping issues with the length of tab titles it the menu, but we could address those either by changing the player labels, or moving those sections from the menu to the topbar.

Thanks,

P

About the Player. Before, I use to be able to switch from Modern Player to Classic player. But now the only choice I have is the Classic player. I want to use the Modern Player but it is not available in the "Current Player" drop-down menu.

When I select "Current Player" -> "Open", I only see the 2 choices:

"Built-in" and

"Presenter Player"

Choosing either one loads the Classic Player. Does anyone know how to re-add the Modern Player?

Thanks

Hi Julius!

Thanks so much for reaching out. Happy to help!

If you go over to the Appearance section of the Player Properties, you'll see a Player Style dropdown. Go ahead and click on Modern and you should be good to go!

Here is a quick look at how to do this:

I hope this helps! Please let us know if you have any other questions.

Hi Luciana Piazza,

Thanks for the quick response.
I seem to be missing the "Player Style:" section on my ribbon. I do remember seeing it there before and trying the different styles when I was first learning. But now it's not there. Any ideas?
