User advance options

Dec 03, 2013

Hi!  I built a course with the option to use audio or read through the material.  I have set a variable that plays audio if the user has selected it and then advances the slide automatically on completion.  I would also like the user to advance the slide on their own as well before the narration is complete if they would like.

Does anyone know how to accomplish this?

Thanks!  I thought the same thing and some of the slides allow you to move to the next before the voice over is complete and others will not allow the slide to advance until the timeline and voice over are finished.  The variable I have in place is for the slide to advance if audio is equal to true once the selected audio has played but I am not sure why it is working with some slides and not others.

Hi Melanie,

You may want to look at the trigger order, and ensure that the variable changing is at the top of the list, since this will control the ability to jump to the next slide. Also, how do you have the trigger set up to adjust the variable once the media begins? Can you share the set up here with us or offer a picture of that trigger (in the edit mode). You'll also want to make sure you're testing the published output within the intended environment, as testing it locally could cause you to encounter some local security restrictions and parts of your content to fail.

Also, it may be easier to diagnose what's happening if you're able to share the .story file here with us. If you'd prefer to share it privately, you can also send it along here.

Hi Melanie,

Looking at the image you shared, I also noticed that within the slide properties on the right hand side it's set to "Slide advances: Automatically" you'll also want to change this to by user, so that a) the user can choose to advance and b) if they don't click next, then you trigger will fire at the end of the timeline and allow them to move forward.

Thanks Ashley,

When I do that the user is left with no option but to click from slide to slide and it will no longer auto advance when the timeline or audio ends.

My goal is to have the user select sound or no sound at the start of the training and if sound is selected auto advance will take place but I do not want to limit the audio group from being able to jump forward if they would like.  Is this possible?

I appreciate your help.

Hi Melanie,

You'd need to track the audio group based on a variable then - that when X variable is equal to Y (which changes when they select audio) the Next button is disabled. You can then leave the auto advance on, and the trigger for the next button to jump to the next slide when X is not equal to Y.  You'll need this variable on each slide too.

If you're not up for tracking variables, you could set it up as a branching scenario, where they select No audio they get Path A, and if they select Yes audio they get Path B - and both have different advancement options.
