Variable "AttemptCount"

Sep 18, 2020

Dear Community,

Last time I created a course I noticed a variable called "AttemptCount" for the first time.
Unfortunately I could not find out when exactly I could use it, because it was not always selectable.
Does anyone have a hint? I would like to use it to show or hide layers, but it was not available there.

Thank you very much and best regards
Reni

I have used the Attemptcount variable to set a condition in triggers on many quiz questions. However, I ran into a situation where the attemptcount variable did not show in the variable list even though the quiz question was set to 2 attempts and I was using if to create a condition. Has anyone ran into this situation? And, if so, how can I solve it.

Hello. Did anyone ever figure this out? I am having the same issue.  I recorded a screen simulation and imported the slides as Test mode so that it will be a quiz.   We are designing it where a user gets 3 attempts and after the second attempt, a highlight box appears to give them a hint as to where to click.  Now three slides did not have the AttemptCount variable as an option and I have no idea why.  I do not have a problem with the other slides.  I even re-recorded the steps for these three slides and it still is not working or giving me the AttemptCount variable.   I need to get this to work as part of a huge project I am responsible for and have many of these simulated system quizes I need to create.  Your help would be greatly appreciated!

Hi Walt.  It is a quiz with all hot spot areas.  I created a system recording of all the steps a learner is supposed to have learned in a prior video.  I imported the screen capture in Test Mode so that it would make it a quiz.  So each hotspot on each slide is graded that way.  We want the users to have 3 attempts, but after 2 attempts, we give the users a "hint" by adding a highlight box where we they are supposed to click on the screen.  I changed the attempts on each of these slides to 3 attempts.  I then had the highlight box initial state as "hidden" and created a trigger to change the state of this shape to "normal" when user clicks outside of the hotspot if the AttemptCount value is 2.  Only on some of the slides, for whatever reason, when I go to create this trigger, there is no variable for AttemptCount.  I did some research and found that the AttemptCount variable gets created when you indicate that the learner has a certain amount of attempts.  Yet for some slides, which are no different than the other slides with the hotspots, this variable AttemptCount does not get created.  Is there a way to create this variable manually?  I have to get this done and I am just at a loss.  Thanks!

Hello Nadia,

I tried generating Test Mode slides from a screen recording in Storyline 360, but I'm still not seeing any AttemptCount variables appear even after I limit the number of attempts for the learners. It looks like a certain sequence needs to be done in order for this variable to appear, and I'll be glad to help you figure out what this is!

Would you be willing to share a copy of your project file here or in private by opening a support case so I can take a closer look at how your slides are setup? We'll delete it when we're done testing!
