Video compression in SL2

May 28, 2016

I am wondering if it makes any difference in the file size of a published SL2 project using videos with a resolution of 1280x720 versus videos with a resolution of 720x576 or 480?  When SL2 compression is set at automatic do all of the videos get compressed to the same size regardless of what resolution they started with?  All of the videos I have used in my project were 1280x720 resolution.  I am willing to replace them all using a resolution of 720x 576 or 480 IF it will make a difference in how fast the course will run.  Does anyone know?  THANKS all!

Hi Sylvia,

Storyline uses a proprietary algorithm where it takes into account the video file, bit rate, resolution, and overall size and then it determines the compression to apply and how it should be encoded, including what elements you change within the publish quality setting. The bit rate is the video property that will change as you adjust the video quality slider on the publish window.  The pixel dimensions of the video will not change - so in terms of your mention of resolution I'm not sure if you meant the overall dimensions?

So the bottom line for our compression is that it's really all about the quality of the video that you bring into Storyline , and how our algorithm decides it can best optimize the video. You can choose to not compress the video in Storyline 2 as detailed here.

Thanks Ashley, what I am trying to figure out is how the file size of the project will turn out based on the size of the videos I use in the project allowing SL2 to do the compression.  Will it matter or will SL2 bring everything to one certain size regardless of the original size of the video.  IE, if I put a high resolution video clip that is perhaps 75mb in SL2 will compress it to say 50 mb or whatever.  If I take the same video and reduce the resolution to say a 50 mb clip before putting it into SL2 will SL2 compress it to the same 50mb size as it did the original clip or will it be smaller?  My goal is to keep the project as small in size as possible to make loading faster (critical for mobile devices).  So, I am trying to understand how SL2 handles it.

Hi Sylvia,

I can't say exactly what it will compress it too - as it's dependent on the factors I mentioned above. I think you may want to look at doing a couple tests to see how the compression quality works for your videos and then determine the "best quality" video you want to insert and let Storyline work it's magic.
