Video Effects

Oct 05, 2012

Hi! I have a few different projects on the go in Storyline which are all quite video heavy - what I'd like to do is add some kind of visual effect behind the actual .mov file to make them stand out a bit more, and also help them to blend in with the page - at the moment they look a bit stark and a border, or a shadow or something like that would help with the look of the slides I think. I know this might be a simple question, but I'm really new to Storyline so may have overlooked an easy option. Thanks!

Hi Margot!  In Storyline you can layer objects, which allows you to not only place objects behind your video (to give the effect of the video playing on a screen of some sort, or even adding a dropshadow effect) but you can even layer objects over top of your video if needed.

The graphics tools in Storyline are really nice, so you can create borders, drop shadows, etc., and just order them behind your video!

One of the built-in templates in Storyline is called Character Display Panels, and there are a three slides you could import that would make a nice backdrop for a video.  Because it is storyline you could remove/change elements from the imported template that you did not want to keep, such as the character.

Hope this helps!

Margot,

Brian's right.  Working with video in Storyline is really quite fun due to being able to layer it with other elements.  I really like Brian's ideas of creating some elements to enhance your layout.  You might consider adding a frame over the top of your video.  For example, you could use the frame shape in SL.  Insert it, adjust the width, height, etc.  And give it a picture fill of some type.  I've attached an example frame I quickly mocked up in SL using a brushed steel motif.  Kinda corny, but sorta fun to play around with!
