Video limits in Storyline 3?

Nov 15, 2018

Hello,

I have a 21 minute .MP4 that I compressed down as far as Storyline would let me.  Some of my users are out where the internet is slow.  Some are reporting that the video will freeze on them, but eventually the play bar completes (but the video is locked) and the user gets to the Quiz at the end.  (Other users watch the video just fine.)

I am wondering is there a table that explains what the MBps is for video encoded at the lowest setting versus the highest?

Also, are there any limits on time?  Would I have better success chopping the video into say 5 minute segments and putting each of those on a slide?  Would that help it stream any better?

Just wondering if any one has any tricks they could share.

Thanks,

Jon

Hi Jon,

It doesn't sound like you're hitting any Storyline limits, but limits within the internet speed of your learners. Do you know what their average is?

If they are struggling with the video added directly into Storyline, I'd also suggest looking at adding it as a web object and hosting the video on a site such as YouTube or Vimeo. Those sites are optimized to provide playback even for individuals who are on a very slow connection.

Thanks Ashley.  The folks are averaging 9 MBps, which isn't too bad.

Unfortunately, I cannot put the video on Vimeo or YouTube because of the content.

I'm going to attempt breaking it up into chucks and sprinkling my quiz questions in between.  Is it okay to break a quiz up like that?  I'm not scoring it, they are really just knowledge check questions.

Hi Jon,

You can break a quiz up however you'd like - and still score it! As long as your results slide appears after all the quiz questions, that's what will track completion and report those results to your LMS.

Breaking up the video sounds like a good alternative to help those learners with lower speeds. Also, I'd look at the overall video quality as you could lower that to create a smaller video size and faster playback.
