Is there a way to take an existing walk-through video and turn it into a simulation using storyline? I have a basic login and process selection video that could very easily be turned into a simulation, I think, if it can be done, of course.
Did you record it in Storyline originally or in another program? If you recorded it in Storyline using the "record screen" button it's accessible to be added again as a step by step recording and therefore more of a simulation where the users could practice.
If you recorded it outside of Storyline, I'll defer to the community on suggestions of how to translate that into a more interactive simulation.
Unfortunately, It was a login process sequence on a piece of standalone machinery in a factory setting, so it wasn't done in Storyline. I will remember that tutorial for future reference. Thank you.
Has the status of this question changed? Can we import an externally-created video and convert it to a simulation in Storyline? I recorded videos using Replay.
Hi Laura! Storyline records your mouse movements and clicks during the screen recording process to create step-by-step slides. If you recorded outside of Storyline, you wouldn't be able to convert that MP4 into interactive slides. Have you thought about manually creating interactive slides using screenshots?
I am somewhat new to Storyline, but I think I found the answer to this question. The answer is yes...you can make a step by step interaction from an MP4 that a client sends you. Here's how I did it.
1. Open the video in any video player
2. Setup the screen recording in Storyline to match the size of the video (note that you may want to size the window such that the player controls don't show up in the recording)
3. Start recording and also start playing the video
4. Follow along with the video and click each time the user clicks in the video
This will create the step by step with the visuals and then with some Action Fine Tuning (by right clicking on the slide) you can adjust the visuals as needed to be very precise.
can we get some clarification on the capabilities of importing an existing mp4 & converting into a Step-by-Step Sim? I have a series of SME training videos I need to layout as interactive software simulations. Joshua's workaround won't work - I'm not a SME the processes are too complex. I need a smarter faster solve. Thanks!
Converting existing videos into interactive screen recordings is not a current feature of Storyline. While you can use workarounds such as Joshua's above or Alyssa's suggestion to convert them to screenshots, I am unaware of any "faster solution."
I'll keep an eye to see what other community members will recommend for your scenario.
There isn't any way to convert an existing MP4 video file into a step-by-step scene in Storyline 360. This is because Storyline 360 needs to detect the user's input, such as keyboard presses and mouse clicks, in order to generate the step-by-step slides.
You'll need to recreate the screen recording from scratch if you want the option to directly convert the recording to step-by-step slides in Storyline 360. You can also check out Joshua's solution here.
Seriously, this is obviously a requirement. I know Adobe Captivate allowed you to import videos into frames and you could create your own simulation. I have received a How To Video from an IT Director that I need to convert into a simulation for staff. What a mission. I certainly cant ask him to redo it using Storyline which he doesn't have, nor would he have the time to do it.
I have a video created by a content specialist. This video was produced outside of Storyline. How can I use Articulate Storyline 360 to convert this video created by the specialist into a simulation? Every tutorial I've come across so far instructs me to use the 'Record Screen' button to record my video. However, I lack the time and expertise to re-record the video myself using Storyline since it was created by a content expert. Can Storyline convert this video into a simulation without requiring me to re-record it using the 'Record Screen' feature? Or is re-recording the video using the 'Record Screen' feature the only option?
Currently, converting existing videos into interactive screen recordings is not a feature of Storyline. I would suggest trying the workarounds offered earlier in the discussion by Joshua and Alyssa.
I'm hopeful to see if other community members can chime in with additional suggestions!

I have the same quistion. Can you import a video file (mp4 ore other) into Storyline and then start the make 'Interactive simulation'.
My client has a process on a system wich I cannot enter ! Ashley or David Fair can you help me out. I need to know what routines I can or cannot make.
Hi Bea! You could import the video if you wish to use it or you could even use Storyline to 'record' the video if you wish to use it in a simulation.

I have already captured videos in Storyline 360, how can I convert to simulation step-by-step?
Good morning, Training Department team!
Did you record the screencast in Storyline by using the Record Screen button? If so, here are the steps to add it as step-by-step slides. I also created this quick video as a visual guide!
Let me know if that helps!

Awesome workaround, thank you!
I'm glad that Joshua's suggestion was able to help you as well, Mariza. I appreciate you chiming in to share, and welcome to E-Learning Heroes. 😊
Does this work only with clicks, or if we have content to type in a data field is that possible. i.e typing a keyword in a search box.

Thanks Maria, that's surprising to hear but a keen challenge for all of us IDs. Back to the drawing board!
Hi there,
Any new updates on the question below?
Can we get some clarification on the capabilities of importing an existing mp4 & converting it into a Step-by-Step Sim?
