I'm sorry to hear about the difficulty you've run in, but I'm unsure what the issue is? Can you not see the options for animating from the top toolbar? If so, you'll want to check theDPI setting for your system as described here.
If I'm misunderstanding, could you share a bit more information here with us?
I highlight an object, clikc animations, choose, say, a line. No image
shows me how long the motion line is so I can shorten or lengthen it. If I
choose freeform, the image is present until I release the mouse button and
then the image disappears. Is there a way to maintain the shape of the
animation?

Ok, so I followed your directions and I see the line indicating how long the motion path will be. I included an image of it below.
What does it look like when you insert a item with a motion path? If you're not seeing it as indicated, and you've already checked your DPI setting can you also look into conducting the repair of Storyline?
