A missed/unexploited business opportunity?

Apr 25, 2013

I have recently realised that Storyline can be used as a wonderful tool to create "online" interactive breakout sessions at classroom events. Possibly a way that we can all bring together the 2 x "worlds" in training, to everyone's (business) benefit.

Hi Bruce,

We've experienced this first hand, and it has been tremendously successful.  I worked with one of our faculty last fall to develop nursing case studies in Storyline that are deployed to iPads via iTunes U.  Students work in groups as they progress through a case, and each case includes one or more "stopping points" where the instructor brings the entire class together for discussion before allowing them to continue. This has made analysis of the cases more seamless for students because all of the patient information, and the nursing apps and other resources used to evaluate the cases, can be accessed on the iPad.  The cases are being used again this semester, and another class is using Storyline activities that I've created for the iPads (see blog post).

As designers/developers we so rarely have an opportunity to see users interact with the eLearning we create.  Since this is a pilot, I've been in the classroom to provide support and it has been a thrill to see students so engaged.  Fun times!

Elizabeth, do the work groups have one iPAD per person?

Bruce, just read your article, very interesting. Would love to talk more at some point about how you are thinking of doing it. e.g. Are you planning any online monitoring/feedback/plenary collection of group work?

Are you distributing hardware as part of the course materials?

Cheers for now

John - it depends on the size of the class.  The first semester the class was very large, and the iPads were shared by 2-3 students.  Both classes this semester are small enough that every student has an iPad. The iPads are school owned, and we use a cart to store, charge and transport them.  Students are required to have the point of care apps on their own devices though, so even when they had to share the iPad to view the case, they were able to do research and analysis on their hand-helds.
