Adapt the virtual classroom content for articulate

Apr 11, 2011

Wondering if anyone has ever found themselves faced with the following challenge?

My client recently ran an online workshop via a virtual classroom.

I've been asked to adapt the virtual classroom content for articulate.

In a few weeks the students will be given access to the articulate content so they might refresh or reacquaint themselves with the online session’s key course points and skills areas.

This might sound easy enough, and yes, on one level I agree.

The challenge I see is for the articulate content NOT to be an information dump or a "rehash" of all the content!  Or should it?

Any pearls of wisdom or perhaps even some examples of this very challenge having been met would be greatly appreciated

Thank you in advance

Hi Nicole, and welcome! If the Articulate-published content you're building is solely intended as a means of giving learners the opportunity to review and refresh what they learned in the live online workshop, then it might actually be a good thing to make the content mirror what they experienced in their workshop. Kind of like when you read a book and then want to go back and look up something specific in that book... it's easier to find what you need because the content is organized in the same way you experienced it the first time... and if there is a well-designed index or other tool that helps you hone in on specific content, then all the better.

With that in mind, there are a number of things you can do to make it easy for learners to find exactly what they want to review. In particular, you can get very intentional about the way you display & organize the sidebar navigation panel, to help learners review just the content they need. For example... if there are, say four sections to the workshop, with several sub-topics in each, you could customize the title of each section in the sidebar appropriately and then use slide levels to clearly show which sub-topics are in each section. Another thing that would probably be helpful is to include the Search tab in the sidebar so users can quickly search the content and get right to what they need.

Another thing that you could easily do is supplement the original workshop content with additional pieces that will make your course richer and more interactive. You could include a knowledge check or trivia-style interaction in each section or sub-topic, or  even some scenarios that help learners apply what they learned.

During the actual live workshop, your online facilitator could make learners aware of your Articulate-published resource and give them pointers on how to use it - particularly if you include some interactive elements. You could use the live workshop as a teaser to get learners excited about using the additional resources you've created.

If you want, feel free to share a little more about the content of your online workshop and the learning objectives, and we can help you brainstorm some more ideas that'll help your learners to reinforce & practice what they learned. :)
