Adding bracket interactions to Storyline

Jul 21, 2014

Hi guys,

One of my colleges is a math teacher and wanted to have an interactive element on his math course. The idea behind the element was to allow students to look at a math equation and be able to put brackets around certain parts of the equation to group the numbers/variables together.

So suppose an equation for example was (and this is made up, so it's not real math)

1x + 34 - 3y + 1/5 = xyz + 45 - 43 + 2

-------------------------------------------------

4x +6

The teacher would love to have an interaction where students could then add bracket such as,

[1x + 34 - 3y ]+ 1/5 = xyz + [45 - 43 + 2]

-------------------------------------------------

4x +6

Is there a good way to add this kind of activity in Storyline? I was wondeirng if a "free form" had this ability somehow with some tweaking.

Thanks for your help!

Hi Darren,

There's no easy way to do this, but that doesn't mean it's impossible. There's a couple of ways you can go about it, but it depends on the initial state of your equation elements (i.e. would it be a text entry box, a series of text entry boxes or a series of static textboxes).

A freeform could be the answer here, but not absolutely necessary. Have a look at the story attached - I've only taken care of the bracket function for the left side of the equation.

There are limitations to this interaction though, so it may not be what you require.

Furthermore, if you also need calculations, then I would imagine these would have to be done entirely in JS.

Hope this helps,
Alex
